The Rabbitohs have released Bayley Sironen from the remaining year of his playing contract to take up an extended deal at the Warriors.

Sironen has played 24 NRL games since making his debut for the Wests Tigers in 2017, 22 of which have been for the Rabbitohs over the past two seasons.

โ€œWe have granted Bayley a release as we did not think it was fair to stand in the way of him taking up an extended and valuable offer at another Club,โ€ Rabbitohs Head of Football Mark Ellison said.

โ€œBayley has served the Club well over the past two years, his dealings with us over this release have been professional and respectful, and we believe he has played the best football of his young career at the Rabbitohs.

โ€œHeโ€™s a great young man and we wish him the best of luck at his new club. He will always be a Rabbitoh.โ€

Meanwhile the Warriors announced Sironenโ€™s signing on a three-year-deal.

โ€œOne of rugby leagueโ€™s most famous names is set to link with the Vodafone Warriors after confirmation South Sydney back rower Bayley Sironen has agreed terms for a three-year contract from next season,โ€ the club said in a statement.

The 23-year-old is the son of the legendary Paul Sironen and younger brother of Manly Sea Eagles star Curtis Sironen.

โ€œWe have had our eyes on Bayley for some time but we didnโ€™t have the positions available at the time,โ€ Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter Oโ€™Sullivan said.

โ€œFortunately he became available now. (Head coach) Nathan (Brown) was keen to add a point of difference to our squad to balance our key signings and Bayley will bring that.

โ€œHe comes from one of the gameโ€™s greatest families and will add some invaluable footy IQ to our squad.โ€

Oโ€™Sullivan said the Vodafone Warriors were grateful to South Sydney CEO Blake Solly, head coach Wayne Bennett and football manager Mark Ellison for their handling of Sironenโ€™s release.

โ€œI was really keen to add an edge/middle forward to our roster for 2021 and Bayley fits the bill,โ€ coach Nathan Brown said.

โ€œHe was able to fill in at five-eighth and centre as well as the back row in 2020 so he adds the versatility, skill and defensive capabilities that we were looking for.

โ€œHis addition puts pressure on all our forwards for positions and adds invaluable depth of quality in our back row.โ€

JOHNS LINKS WITH FATHERโ€™S OLD CLUB THE KNIGHTS

The Knights have announced the signing of Jack Johns on a one year development contract.

Johns, the son of Knights legend Matthew and nephew of Immortal Andrew, returns to the Knights after spending two seasons with South Sydney.

Despite not having a reserve grade competition in 2020, Johns forced his way into Wayne Bennettโ€™s team and made his NRL debut in Round 11 against the Raiders.

The 23-year-old played 24 games for the Knights in the 2017 Holden Cup, finishing the year playing in the World Cup for Italy.

With a much bigger build than his father, Johns has grown into a dynamic and strong back-rower with sky-high potential, while still being at home in the No.6 jersey his father made so famous in the 1990s.

Knights General Manager Of Football, Danny Buderus, said he was looking forward to having Johns back at the Knights.

โ€œJack has developed both physically and as a footballer, while being a much different shape to Matty and Andrew,โ€ Buderus said.

โ€œHis transition into a ball-playing middle forward with good footwork will provide a skill set which adds to the depth of our squad.โ€

The development deal will tie Johns to the Knights until at least the end of the 2021 season.

TIGERS SIGN ROBERTS AND PANTHERS YOUNG GUN

Meanwhile Wests Tigers have snatched one of the most promising young fullbacks in the game from Penrith.

The Tigers have signed 21-year-old Daine Laurie, but he wonโ€™t arrive at Concord until 2022 as heโ€™s contracted to the Panthers for another season.

It comes a day after the Tigers also announced the signing of James Roberts.

โ€œIโ€™m very excited to be a part of a quality club which is obviously on the rise,โ€ Roberts said.

โ€œThe opportunity to reunite with Michael Maguire is too good to pass up and Iโ€™m looking forward to working closely with him again.

โ€œIโ€™m also really impressed with the work Wests Tigers are doing in creating pathways for Aboriginal people and itโ€™s something Iโ€™m really passionate about.

โ€œIโ€™d like to thank South Sydney for the support theyโ€™ve given me and my family over the past two years and I canโ€™t wait to start my new chapter with Wests Tigers.โ€

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe welcomed Roberts to the club and commended his attitude throughout the negotiation process in recent weeks.

โ€œOn behalf of all at the club, Iโ€™d like to welcome James to Wests Tigers,โ€ Pascoe said.

โ€œJames is a phenomenal athlete and provides another x-factor to our outside backs.

โ€œWe firmly believe that the NRL is better off having talents like James in the competition and weโ€™re looking forward to working closely with him both on and off the field.

โ€œJames understands the responsibility he has to his teammates, the Wests Tigers Members and all those associated with the club and is extremely determined to ensure this opportunity directly contributes to the success of Wests Tigers.โ€

Wests Tigers Coach Michael Maguire echoed Pascoeโ€™s comments in welcoming Roberts to the club.

โ€œJames is clearly an exceptional footballer who will add a lot to our side and Iโ€™m very pleased to see him continue his rugby league career with Wests Tigers,โ€ Maguire said.

Meanwhile the Knights announced the re-signing of Josh King on a one year deal for the 2021 season.

King said heโ€™s excited to be staying in Newcastle for another season.

โ€œI am passionate about the region and the Club so I am over the moon to be staying on for another yearโ€ King said.

โ€œ2020 was an important year in that I was able to earn my spot the hard way. I was really pleased to be able to play seven games and will be pushing hard to play more next season.

โ€œIโ€™ve been working hard since the end of the season and cannot wait to get back into pre-season training. I know I have a lot to offer and I thank Adam and everyone at the club for backing me to reach my full potential.โ€

DRAGONS RELEASE VETERAN, RE-SIGN FORWARD

Meanwhile, the Dragons have released forward Korbin Sims from the final year of his contract. The 28-year-old is departing the Red V to take up an opportunity with English Super League club, Hull KR on a two-year deal. He played 141 games in the NRL โ€” 21 of those for the Dragons.

โ€œIโ€™d like to thank Korbin for his contribution at the Red V and wish him all the best in his future endeavours,โ€ Dragonsโ€™ general manager of football Ben Haran said.

St George Illawarra have also re-signed forward Kaide Ellis on a one-year deal after the former Panther joined the club mid-season.

โ€œKaide arrived at the Dragons in recent months with high credentials and he certainly proved a positive addition to our team in the back end of last season,โ€ Haran said.

KNIGHTS ADD TO THEIR PACK

The Knights have signed former Bulldogs forward Sauaso Sue on a two-year-deal.

Sue has played 142 NRL games and will join the Knights in time for their 2021 pre-season and will stay with the club until at least the end of the 2022 season.

Finally the Knights announced the signing of Raiders star Josh Hodgsonโ€™s nephew Bailey on a three-year-deal.

Hodgson, will arrive in Australia on Saturday to enter two weeks of mandatory quarantine before linking with the Knights squad for the 2021 pre-season.

An English youth international, Hodgson made his Super League debut for the Castleford Tigers, just ten days after his 18th birthday.

At home at fullback and in the centres, Hodgson will bring a mix of strike, balance and game awareness skills to the Knights squad.

Knights Head of Recruitment, Clint Zammit, said the young livewire will be given every chance to develop under the tutelage of Adam Oโ€™Brien and the senior playing squad.

โ€œBailey is an exciting prospect, he is a natural athlete with great balance and footwork,โ€ he said.

โ€œFor the past 13 months I have watched him continue to develop rapidly.

โ€œHis willingness to work hard and compete in every aspect has allowed him to play in the Super League, despite his age.

โ€œWhilst he is only young, he will be afforded all the time and resources required to allow him to grow into a player that we anticipate will have a long career at the Knights.โ€

Hodgsonโ€™s contract will see him remain a Knight until at least the end of the 2023 season.
