Fox Searchlight’s “12 Years a Slave” took best picture prize at the 19th Critics Choice Movie Awards, which was also honored for supporting actress Lupita Nyong’o and scripter John Ridley.
Sony’s “American Hustle” took prizes for acting ensemble, top comedy film, comedy actress (Amy Adams) and makeup.
Warner Bros.’ “Gravity” nabbed prizes for director Alfonso Cuaron, editing, cinematography, music score, visual effects, sci-fi/horror film and actress in an action movie (Sandra Bullock, who joked about the film being defined in that genre). Focus Features’ “Dallas Buyers Club” was a double winner, for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto.
“Blue is the Warmest Color” picked up prizes for foreign-language film and young actor/actress (Adele Exarchpoulos). Other double winners include “Lone Survivor” (action film and actor Mark Wahlberg) and “Great Gatsby” (for costume and production design). “Frozen” won for animated film and song.
The event boasted an impressive turnout including Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Oprah Winfrey, Forest Whitaker and nearly every winner including Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett and Bullock.
The ceremony was scheduled at the end of a long day for many attendees who had been awake since before dawn for Oscar nominations. But arriving a few days after the Golden Globes, a lot of the contenders were in town.
The Critics Choice winner continued on the take home the top Oscar in seven of the last 10 years. However, in a wide-open year such as this, anything can happen.
The awards are given out by the Broadcast Film Critics Assn., which began in 1995 and includes about 280 reviewers from TV, radio and online in the U.S. and Canada.
The 19th annual rite was held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and telecast on the CW network, starting at 5 p.m. PST. It aired live on the east coast, tape-delayed in the west. Aisha Tyler hosted the show, which was produced by Bob Bain Prods. and Berlin Entertainment.
