The Hexapla Institute

Publishing a new critical edition of the fragments of Origen's Hexapla

Introduction

The Hexapla Project is committed to producing a New Field for the 21st century, and is a co-operative venture of the following:

  • The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
  • VU University Amsterdam
  • University of Oxford
  • The Hexapla Project

Prior Editions

Many collections of the hexaplaric fragments led up to Frederick Field's magnum opus, but from 1875 on, Field's Hexapla became the departure for all scholarly study. His two volume edition is available for free download from the Internet Archive.

The second Apparatus of the Göttingen Septuaginta provides an extensive collection of hexaplaric fragments for all the available books except Psalms, which does not have a second apparatus.

The apparatus of the Larger Cambridge Septuagint also provides hexaplaric fragments for the available books, and is also available for free download from the Internet Archive.

Differences

Field attempted a critical reconstruction of the original text of the fragments in his edition. Although his evidence was by no means complete, he reconstructed the original wording of the fragments and provided a textual commentary in Latin in the footnotes.

Although the other two editions have a more full evidence register than Field, they do not attempt a critical reconstruction of the hexaplaric fragments. They list the fragments so that the scholar might see how the fragments may have influenced the textual transmission of the Septuagint.

The Hexapla Project combines the vision of Field for a critical text of the hexaplaric fragments with the most up-to-date evidence and sources available.
