Mahmoud Marei to “Hashtag”: I ran because I do not accept a constitutional or presidential vacuum in the country … and I am certain that the People’s Assembly will support

The applicant to run for the Syrian presidency, Mahmoud Marei, expected that he would obtain the support of 35 members of the People’s Assembly, which would guarantee his qualification to become a candidate for the presidential elections in Syria on May 26th.
In a special statement to “hashtag,” Marei said, “My belief in ensuring the support of the members of the People’s Assembly made me enter the field of elections.” Marei pointed out, “This may not be the case, especially after the number of applicants to run for the presidency of the republic has reached 19 until today.”
According to Marei, it is possible that the final accepted names of the candidates will be issued next Thursday, after which the announcement of the electoral program for each candidate becomes a must, knowing that he is “completely ready.”
Marei, a member of the internal national opposition in Syria, entered the election race despite “the result is known in advance” for those who are accepted, and who will obtain the support of the parliament members in the first stage, he says.
About the reason for his participation, he adds: “I support participation in the presidential elections, running and electing, because it is a constitutional entitlement, and we in the national opposition do not accept that there is a constitutional or presidential vacuum in the country.”
About the expectations of the next stage and the names of those who were accepted, Mari said: “All the public expectations are possible, and all the possibilities are acceptable, but in the end the people will decide who will be their president in the next stage, and we hope that Syria will have a real political, democratic and pluralistic life.”
Mahmoud Merhi was born in 1957 from Telfita in Rural Damascus, and holds a law degree from Damascus University.
He held several positions, namely, the position of Secretary-General of the Syrian Democratic Opposition Front, Secretary-General of the National Democratic Action Commission, and a member of the internal opposition negotiating delegation in Geneva.
Marei submitted to the People’s Assembly a request for his candidacy for the presidential elections, the candidate is 11, while the number of applications until now has reached 19.
The Speaker of the People’s Assembly announced the opening of candidacy for the presidential elections, in implementation of the provisions of the constitution, as of last Monday, and applications for candidacy will continue to be submitted to the Supreme Constitutional Court until the end of the official working hours from Wednesday the 28th of April 2021.
