Library Membership

At the Rodney Seaborn Library we offer membership to eligible applicants and welcome people to connect, explore and learn. Join the library at NIDA to access a range of specialist materials, including books, play scripts and sound and video recordings.

We are also open to the general public, by visitor appointments.

Who is eligible for membership?

Library membership is open to:

Who is not eligible for membership?

While all non-members are welcome to use the library via visitor appointment, membership is not open to:

  • the general public
  • school students
  • teachers
  • students of other arts and theatre institutions
  • TAFE students or students of other universities, except postgraduates from SAM
  • NIDA Open ensemble participants
  • NIDA Open tutors (unless you have been provided with an NIDA Open Tutor Card).

What can graduate members borrow?

Members can borrow:

  • ten scholarly texts for two weeks
  • ten playscripts for two weeks
  • two CDs for one week
  • two videos for one week

Members may not remove the following from the library:

  • reference books
  • journals
  • items on restricted loan.

Membership fees

Valid membership of the library requires a non-refundable fee of $80 per annum. The yearly fee contributes to the costs of running the library and is current from the date of joining.

Recent graduates up to 12 months from finishing their course are offered a discounted membership rate of $60.

Overdue items

From 2017, NIDA Library will not charge overdue fees. However, if an item is overdue you will be immediately blocked from borrowing and will receive an invoice for the replacement of the item (usually ranging from $20–$200) within four weeks.

Lost and recalled items

An item may be:

  • considered lost if it is not returned within two weeks of a reminder note being sent
  • recalled ahead of its due date in exceptional circumstances.

Membership Cards

All members receive a NIDA library membership card. Members must have their membership card with them at all times in the library. Failure to produce a membership card when asked will prevent the borrowing of items.

A $5 fee is incurred for replacement of lost or stolen cards.

Lost or damaged items

Lost or damaged items will be replaced or paid for by the member.

Minor damage will be repaired in the library and the librarian will decide if the item is repairable.

Replaced items

If you replace an item you must provide us with a new or as-new copy of the same (or superior) editor of the lost item.

Paid-for items

If you pay for a lost or damaged item you will be charged a:

  • replacement cost
  • a replacement fee of up to $10 depending on the availability and necessity of the item.

Staff members and postgraduates School of Arts and Media, UNSW

What can postgraduate and staff members borrow?

Members can borrow:

  • five books for two weeks
  • two CDs for one week
  • two videos for one week

Members may not remove the following from the library:

  • lighting stencils
  • items on restricted loan.

Membership

Valid membership of the library requires a current UNSW ID card.

The UNSW ID card is the same card members use to borrow materials from the library at NIDA. Members must have their ID card with them at all times in the library and failure to produce an ID card when asked will prevent the borrowing of items.
