Patrick Mahomes ran nearly 500 yards before throwing or getting sacked

The Chiefs didn’t have much of a running game last night. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, however, did plenty of running in the passing game.

According to NextGenStats, via Seth Walder of ESPN.com, Mahomes ran 497 yards before throwing the ball or being sacked on Sunday night. It was the highest total for any quarterback in the 2020 season.

Second on the list? Mahomes in Week Five, against the Raiders. That day, Mahomes ran for 495 yards before throwing the ball or getting sacked.

This time around, Mahomes had a toe injury. While it wasn’t a factor in the AFC Championship, it was a factor on Sunday night. Mahomes fought through it, doing whatever he had to do in an effort to will his team back into the game.

Some are criticizing Mahomes for his performance in Super Bowl LV. That’s a lazy take; Mahomes played heroically and admirably.

Although Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady won the Super Bowl MVP award, here’s the reality: The game was won by the team’s defense. Indeed, if Mahomes and Brady had flipped teams before kickoff, the outcome would have been as bad — if not much worse — for the Chiefs.

The offensive line wasn’t good. The playcalling abandoned the run (again). The receivers weren’t getting open or catching balls that hit their hands, or elsewhere. The defense was sloppy and undisciplined.

The Chiefs lost the game for many reasons. Patrick Mahomes was not one of those reasons.

  1. He was there only shot at winning. He had some amazing throws that the receivers could not catch for him. I thought he played extremely well for the circumstances.

  2. Indeed, if Mahomes and Brady had flipped teams before kickoff, the outcome would have been as bad — if not much worse — for the Chiefs.
    _________

Whoa, now THAT’S a lazy take. Yes, the o-line struggled, but Brady would have flipped the script and gotten the ball out every play in 0.9 seconds, minimizing the impact of the Bucs pass rush. Just because Mahomes had no pocket presence, doesn’t make him a hero. He was seeing ghosts and his three early runs actually made things worse for him because once the Bucs started containing, the game was over.

  3. It’s good for everyone to see how important an O Line is. Even the elite qbs look below average when having to deal with constant pressure

  4. There were times when he was running where he needed ‘one way’ signs on the field to tell him which direction to go.

  5. … if Mahomes and Brady had flipped teams before kickoff, the outcome would have been as bad — if not much worse — for the Chiefs.

Now that’s a lazy take. The Chiefs got their butts kicked last by the Bucs, offense and defense. Don’t try to minimize it.

  6. The QB position has been downgraded with running.

    RBs run QBs throw.

That is what seperates Brady, Montana, Marino, Manning, from all the running QBs out there.

A Leader has to stand his ground and win with his eyes, brain, arm, and will.

  7. He and Josh Allen are incredibly talented but they both need to spend a lot of time this offseason watching film and realizing how many yards they cost their teams by running backwards to try to get out of trouble. If you can’t step up or move sideways, throw the damn ball away. Just because you CAN run, doesn’t always mean you should. This is something the savvy veteran QBs come to realize.

  8. Kansas City better figure out what to do in the future and make play-calling adjustments that don’t have Mahomes serpentining 20 yards backwards when there’s pressure with out the blitz. As talented as he is, this is not a career longevity plan.

  9. Mahomes and Brady both played well, but that game was clearly won by the Bucs defense.

  10. Now we’re puttin Tom Brady on the Chiefs and saying he would’ve loss? Come on man, clearly Tampa Bay was more prepared, focused and disciplined. The Chiefs got caught up in the hype and got molly whopped.

  11. Completely agree. Mahomes can’t do it all by himself, though he sure did try. That o-line was swiss cheese.

  12. That’s a crazy stat. It’s really too bad the guys on KC’s OL got hurt when and how they did. This could’ve / should’ve been one of the best Super Bowls of all time and instead all we got was Mahomes running for his life, still making unbelievable throws, and his receivers dropping them even when they were hit right on the hands.

  13. In the trenches, the Cheifs were absolutely slaughtered and it was obvious they were completely outcoached

  14. That throw on fourth down where his body was parallel to the ground when he released it was the single greatest throw I’ve ever seen. It’s too bad it wasn’t completed so we could watch it for years to come because that was unbelievable how far and accurately he threw that from that position.

  15. Mahomes played heroically and admirably.

    ______

Oh, give me a break…. Patrick has peaked.

  16. I completely agree with all points. And it proves that most of the time, quarterbacks get all of the blame and the glory, which isn’t fair for either quarterback in this case. The Bucs defense should have won MVP. And the Chiefs’ O-line was atrocious.

  17. Isn’t Mahomes supposed to be a “mobile quarterback”

And he is one of the reasons the Chiefs lost the game.

  18. Mahomes running around, and avoiding sacks while in the grasp and throwing passes that were on the money was some of the most amazing QB play I’ve seen in 50+ years watching football. Some of them would have been completed too, if not for Tampa’s close coverage.

  19. Tom Brady is a master at calling his protections prior to the snap. He knows when to keep a 6th or 7th guy in to help block, even if it means he has less receiving options to throw to. Seemed like the Chiefs never smartened up at any point to improve their pass-protection, and thought Mahomes scrambling for almost 500 yards just to ensure they had more receiving options was a good idea. It wasn’t.

The GOAT only needs 3 or 4 receiving options a play go to work.

  20. anyone can run 500 yards BACKWARDS…. LoL….
    9 points/ NO TD/ never even made it a challenge – overhyped!

  21. Now that the blueprint is out there the Chiefs fall back to the pack and Mahomes seems a whole lot less invulnerable. DC’s around the league will be watching this game on a loop for the next 6 months. 1 year dynasty indeed…

  22. I couldn’t believe the zip Mahomes was putting on the ball, from some of the throwing positions he was forced into by a relentless pass rush. It seemed every pass attempt was challenged. He is a rare talent, last night’s performance was an eye opener.

  23. The Chiefs should have been more creative early in the offensive play calling. End-arounds, short screens, etc. That would have negated the Bucs defensive attack. It kept being deep drop backs and Mahomes having to run around.

Such poor scheme by the Chiefs and the inability to implement in-game adjustments.

  24. “Mahomes running around, and avoiding sacks while in the grasp and throwing passes that were on the money was some of the most amazing QB play I’ve seen in 50+ years watching football. Some of them would have been completed too, if not for Tampa’s close coverage.”

    Don’t forget the drops.
Mahomes didn’t get any help from his receivers, as there several throws that either hit their hands or helmets.
Can’t sustain a career running around like that, but damn did he still make some unbelievable passes last night.

  25. Not many defenses can do that, but if you continue to talk up the KC offense and have a staff like this they take it personal.

  26. I couldn’t believe how poor their line played but I was just astounded at how many crazy throws he got off that somehow were still on target enough to give his receiver a chance at it.

  27. Best pass of the Game was the ‘One that Wasn’t’
Mahomes being tackled, he is horizontal with the ground and throws into the end zone, spot on, only to be batted down by Bucs D.

  28. You sound like an apologist, Brady is just way better and his d played their hearts out for him because he knows how to lead.

The Cheifs were trying to give Mike Remmers some help, but the BUCs figured them out on this one and it was just a mismatch in the trenches from the get go. Both teams knew the O Line of Kansas City would require help, it wasn’t a secret at all. Andy Reid failed, Bowles succeeded, game.

  30. The Cheifs came in and got trucked. Got right back on the plane and went home. The receivers all looked lost. Coming up lame on routes, not fighting for the ball and definitely not helping their QB while he was running for his life. What were the half time adjustments? The literally came out with the same plays that only got them field goals and no firsts.

  31. Mahomes is the next Peyton Manning…gets all of the credit when his team wins, gets none of the blame when they lose.

  32. Yes…Mahomes played terrible and made bad decisions.

The OC, Eric Bienemy didn’t adjust. Why the excuses?

    Great game Tampa and TB12

  33. That was the whole game, right there. Brady played terrifically well, the Bucs’ offense and secondary made some key plays, but the story of the game was the Bucs’ defensive line utterly collapsing everything the Chiefs tried to do.

They were like a wrecking ball swinging into every single play, sending the whole Chiefs offense scattering like bowling pins.

Ahead of the game, I didn’t think the DL could make that decisive of a difference, and oh man was I wrong.

  34. Sounds familiar.

    Russell Wilson?

Only runs when he has to, both play ( Mahomes did for last night anyway ) behind flimsy O-Lines, meaning they are running for their lives a lot of the time.

    =========

That was astounding. He’s in the process of being tackled and falling down and he sidearms a pass 20 yards right to the hands of the receiver in the end zone. Even if the Bucs’ DB was usually there to break it up (they played so well in this game), the passes were remarkable.

  36. So has the Bieniemy hype train been derailed? The lack of adjustments at halftime was glaring.

  37. This shows the “boring” importance of building depth. Licht did a fantastic job with low-viz acquisitions like McLendon and others. Stinnie came in for Cappa at RG and played well. If a team operates on the assumption that their starting tackles are going to go down at some point and invest in depth, they end up winning championships.

Isn’t Mahomes supposed to be a “mobile quarterback”

And he is one of the reasons the Chiefs lost the game.

    ****************************************************************************

He was injured — did you even watch the game. You could see him laboring around between plays. It was a known issue coming in. That’s going to affect anyone’s mobility.

  39. Virtue signaling aside, you are as good as your score. Tom Brady killed it last night. It isn’t up for debate. Patrick Mahommes did not, didn’t even play a good game. Again, not up for a debate.

  40. I realize injuries caught up with them, but Chiefs OL was awful. I felt bad for Mahomes trying to work miracles back there.

Gotta be demoralizing to run around for 12 seconds avoiding sacks and then throw a perfect ball while falling over completely parallel to the ground just to have it bounce off Darrel Williams’ face in the end zone. If Pringle could’ve come down with his throw in bounds, would’ve rivaled Santanio Holmes for one of best SB catches of recent history.

  41. The playcalling abandoned the run (again)

    ———————-

It should be noted that Andy Reid let Eric Bieniemy call the plays during the Super Bowl.

Don’t make that mistake again big Red.

  42. Fisher,The Doc, and Schwartz were also important players on that Chiefs championship team? Mahomes didn’t win it by himself?????

  43. My take is, Mahomes still is a threat with his legs, but the toe issue highlights that the best he can do is stay even with where he was – and I don’t think that’s physically sustainable for more than a few years. His o-line was terrible in the SB, and with injuries and contract status, getting it back into shape is going to cost them. There will be other departures through free agency over the next couple of years. Coupled with the Chiefs being in the bottom quarter of the league in terms of effective cap space (-$23 million), I don’t really see them improving from this season to the next one.

  44. The offensive adjustment(lack there of) by the Chiefs is the story. Yes their o-line was bad and the Bucs d-line was fantastic, they needed more check downs, more screens and more RUNS. They refused to adjust. And I get it, you’ve been successful doing the 15-20yd plays all year long. Someone said the Bucs offense looked different week to week in the second half, reminded me of Patriots teams. Godwin and Evans combined for like 4 catches and 60 yards, who would think they win that game?

And as others said, Brady would get the ball out quickly to neutralize pass rush and ‘take what the defense gives him’ underneath. Mahomes and the offense refused to do that, that’s on them.

Bucs were May more prepared. Final answer.

  45. It was the perfect storm for the Chiefs.

Mahomes with a turf toe – OK. He’s slower, but he can still do well.
2 O-line out – Ut oh. Mahomes will have to run even more.
Coach Reid mentally back in KC with his son – poor play-calling. He said it didn’t make a difference, but any parent will tell you otherwise.
A Tampa offense and defense that’s playing lights out. Tampa didn’t even need Brady in that game. They only needed 10 points to win.

    Super Bowl Blowout

  46. Whoa, does 15 have the ability to audible? Did he see how much space running plays had with them dropping 6 back? How about quick hitter slants and hitches. CEH wide on many passes out of backfield with a blocker and 1 defender 10 yards away. Just dump it dude! Maybe his ego of big plays downfield caught up to him?
Champions find ways to win not pad stats.

  47. “According to NextGenStats, via Seth Walder of ESPN.com, Mahomes ran 497 yards before throwing the ball or being sacked on Sunday night.”

    – yet he was still less successful than ‘the streaker’ who actually got into the end zone…

  48. KC got shellacked in all phases of the game. Brady was an efficient 20/26… with 3 1st half TDs. Tampa also ran the ball down KC’s throat in the 2nd half to the point that it looked like KC’s defense had just given up. And Tampa’s defensive front kept Mahomes from being comfortable the entire night. It was easily the worst game the kid has ever played in the NFL….and it was on the big stage. Last night Patrick got a small taste of how Peyton felt in the early 2000s when playing against Brady and the Pats.

  49. It was delightful to watch him scramble for his life. How many teams has he lit up with his runs?

Last night, Tampa Bay lit him up and forced him to run.

    Spectacular!

  50. For those wondering, Brady has played playoff games with garbage offensive lines. Go watch the 2015 AFC championship game against that top ranked Broncos defense. He was knocked down like 23 times. While he didn’t play well, they only lost by 3 points. And, again, his offensive line collapsed against the Giants in Super Bowl XLII, and obviously Brady struggled. The same happened against the Broncos in the 2013 playoff game. However, no matter what happened in each of these playoff games, he ultimately kept his team in the game. There is no comparison.

  51. It was the perfect storm for the Chiefs.

    Super Bowl Blowout

Calling it a “perfect storm” does an absolute disservice to the bucs. Defensively they applied a similar game plan the Chiefs did to stop josh Allen. Makes sense, they are both similar qbs although I think mahomes is a bit better as a passer and alllen is a bit better as a runner.

    Bucs curbs stomped them

  52. Tyrann Mathieu reverted to his old self of years ago as an out of control idiot. His penalties seemed to set the stage for the balance of the game.

Too bad for his teammates who were trying to win the game, not lose it.

  53. Mahomes Wife wsa immediately talking about their expected child. Hey Pat, next time Rocky II is on – watch a little closer to what’s happening there.

  54. Mahomes was the only Chief that showed up last night … that being said the Bucs did a great job of not letting him get the edge when he running ….3-4 guys chasing and the rest covering wrecked the Chiefs offense last night …. their defense was just bad all night …. they barely pressured a 43 year old QB that has never been mobile … you know where he’s going to be on every passing down. Last night showed again what kind of DC Spags is when he doesn’t have superstar pass rushers to carry his scheme.

  55. I think it’s hilarious whenever I see someone make this statement; “Now that the blueprint is out there the Chiefs fall back to the pack” about the Chiefs or any team. It makes ZERO sense. So any time a team loses a game, other teams now have the “blue print” to beat them and they’ll no longer be good. That makes ZERO sense. LOLOLOLOL

  56. 23 – 31 is a lot closer of a loss, and thats the score in my head as two passes were dropped in the end-zone (both hit the receivers in the facemask).

The part of that I loved and LMAO over, was when the Giants “stole” Nate Solder the LT from the Patriots and discovered he was a turnstile. That’s what happens when you have a QB who is covering the stench of the O-line. I always said a determined cheerleader could get past Solder unless Mankins was helping him.

It’s good for everyone to see how important an O Line is. Even the elite qbs look below average when having to deal with constant pressure.
    ___________________________________

Maybe he’s not as “elite” as the media announces. Running sideways, backways, slantways doesn’t get you wins unless you move the LOS forward and score touchdowns. I wonder how Mahomes would have looked in Philly this year with those turnstyles that Wentz and Hurts had to deal with. And double and triple teams on Hill and Kelce slowed that offense down. Mahomes had some nice warning track throws, but it has to go over the fence to count.

  60. I hate how everything is so black or white with people. You’re either great or you’re terrible. No in between. No consideration for the amazing games he had in the regular season and the comeback wins in the playoffs. No consideration that they lost in the championship game.

Here’s the facts: Brady is statistically the greatest qb ever and Mahomes is really really really good with a lot of career ahead of him.

  61. No excuses, best team won. But the Chiefs were hindered by having two starting OL out. Props to Brady and the Bucs. They earned it, handidly!

  62. “The streaker was tackled at the one yard line, actually”

    – which was still closer than ol’ 497 the overhype Mahomes got, actually…

  63. Mahomes should do a sneaker commercial with film from this game.

Slogan would be : ‘When you can’t throw just RUN!!!’

  64. Running QB’s have a shorter career than pure pocket passers. Being able to avoid the rush is way more important than running like Jackson, Mahomes, and Watson, IMHO. I would take a Moon, Simms, Marino, Manning’s type QB over Jackson, Mahomes, Watson, RGIII, or Kap any day of the week.

  65. Why the heck didn’t KC run the ball more in the first half? Hill and Kelce were EACH drawing double teams down the field, leaving the 15 yards ahead of the line of scrimmage open.

  66. Honestly, I was more impressed with Mahomes this superbowl than the last. What a player!

The rest of his team… not so much. They weren’t ready for what Tampa Bay brought. I guess they thought they had it in the bag?

The play where Mahomes scrambled, threw it while falling at a crazy angle, only to have it bounce off of his receivers face (though it had a defender in the way, too) summarized the entire night.

Tampa Bay’s defense was one of the best all year, and they showed you why.

  67. Mahomes seems to rely on broken down plays too often to move the ball. I have not seen where he can run a 3, 5, 7 step drop and the ball is out type of offense consistently.

  68. If you are going to anoint someone as “Baby Goat” , you cant make excuses for their play.

  69. It’s a copy cat league and now teams playing Mahomes will try to duplicate Todd Bowles game plan.

I have to disagree. I think Lamar Jackson would have been the only QB in the league who would have been able to do anything behind the KC O-Line.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________

if we are going to play that game, then the final score would have been 23-38. The Bucs lineman dropped a TD pass in the end zone on the same drive where they were stopped at the 1. Any way you slice it, the Chiefs got owned last night.

  72. I agree that the MVP award should have gone to the TB defense. Brady had a good game but nothing special. The defense however was awesome.

  73. Mahomes was scared to death to stand tall in the pocket. Browns really did a number on him 3 weeks ago. lol Patty looked like Johnny Manziel and played like him too last night.

  74. That’s pretty much what Lamar Jackson does in every game.

Which also explain why he lost.

  75. What a waste of time and energy all his running around playing hero ball was. It didn’t create any wing. The NFL got caught overselling Mahomes as a generational relent. He’s ok wieh lots of weapons. Justin Herbert is a lot more relented than he is, and a lot smarter as well. He will take everything the league wants Mahomes to have. Just as Brady took everything the League tried to bequeath to Manning. Chiefs won’t even be in playoffs next year

  76. It wasn’t all Mahomes fault. In fact, I’d say it mostly wasn’t his fault. The game proved that Mahomes isn’t superman. He still needs a team to play well and execute, like any other QB in the league. His receivers were dropping balls and his OL put on one of the worst performances I’ve seen in a Super Bowl. Bad coaching too. No adjustments at half-time. They did nothing to get the OL some help. They did nothing to try to scheme Tampa out of the deep safety look.

  77. Tell me. Tell me the part about the Chiefs rolling the Bucs. 90% of “experts”: would you like to fess up to your infatuation w the video game Chiefs offense?

The Bucs ravaged the Chiefs D Line and O Line. It’s nice to know that the trenches and physically owning a team is the thing.

  79. Man, a lot of salty people here. Greatness brings the jealous out of the woodwork when you have a bad game. Each one of you, even Tampa Fans (Tom has maybe a year or two left) would take Mahomes as your team’s quarterback in a heartbeat. If you say “NoPe, nOt mE..” you’re lying… Dude play as well as anyone behind a sh*t line. Tampa only rushed 4 and dropped 8. Tough to play against that. Tampa also had short fields with Tommy T. Punting it off the side of his foot. Also, while the refs didn’t decide the game, they affected it. Chiefs had two great defensive series then the flags started flying and they were never the same. Flags kept some drives alive and added points and took away turnovers. Very tricky-tack. Google it. Lots of reputable people saying this. Again, Chiefs never got into the endzone so not saying they win but the “inconsistency” and “lopsidedness” with the penalties played a factor. Everyone will say “you’re making excuses “blah blah blah.” Sometimes the reason for something happening isn’t an excuse. Chief fans aren’t fazed by this. Need some OL help (deep draft. Save money) and some LB help and this dynasty train is back on track. #delayedrunitback

  81. He’s only been playing quarterback for a short time in comparison to Tom. His understanding of pass protecting and other things will likely improve. In the meantime, getting an in game work out via running for your life is not only good for the cardio , but it’s a teachable moment as well.

  82. Had the receivers not dropped so many of Mahomes excellent throws, the game would have at least been closer. They may have still lost, but it would have been a much better game.
