Lady Gaga & Kygo Debut at Nos. 1 & 2 on Top Dance/Electronic Albums Chart
Gaga is also the first artist to claim five of the top 10 spots on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs in a single week.
Lady Gaga earns her sixth No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart (dated June 13) with the debut of Chromatica. With the coronation, Gaga passes Daft Punk and The Chainsmokers, each with five No. 1s, and trails only Louie DeVito, with seven, for the most in the chart’s 19-year history.
Chromatica earned 274,000 equivalent album units in the week ending June 4, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. That’s the second-highest total for any album’s debut frame in the chart’s lifespan; only Madonna’s MDNA started with more: 359,000 on the list dated April 14, 2012, when the survey was based purely on album sales.
Album sales comprise 75% of Chromatica’s overall debut frame (205,000 of 274,000), with the set’s sales bolstered by dozens of merchandise/album bundles sold via Gaga’s official webstore and a concert ticket/album sale offer tied to her three upcoming U.S. stadium shows scheduled for August. Streaming equivalent album (SEA) units total 65,000 (equating to 87.16 million on-demand streams of the set’s tracks in the week ending June 4) and track equivalent album (TEA) units equal a little more than 4,000.
Chromatica, which concurrently blasts in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, has yielded 13 entries on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, including 10 debuts this week. Of those, two start in the top 10: “Alice” (No. 7) and “911” (No. 10). (Go figure: “911” is the third song with a numeral in its title to hit the top 10 since the chart’s January 2013 inception, joining David Guetta’s “2U,” featuring Justin Bieber, which reached No. 4 in 2017, and Zedd and Katy Perry’s “365,” which hit No. 7 in 2019.)
Lady Gaga now has eight total top 10s on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, extending her record for the most among female acts. This week alone, she holds half of all top 10 spots, becoming the first artist ever to sport such a share. With Ariana Grande, she rules for a second frame with “Rain on Me”; with BLACKPINK, she soars 8-3 with “Sour Candy”; and she improves 6-4 with “Stupid Love,” which logged three weeks on top in March, in addition to her aforementioned two debuts.
At No. 2 on Top Dance/Electronic Albums, Kygo debuts with Golden Hour (27,000 units). The Norwegian DJ/producer adds his fourth top 10, following Cloud Nine (No. 1, June 2016), EP Stargazing (No. 3, October 2017) and Kids in Love (No. 1, November 2017).
Plus, Kygo tallies 11 debuts on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs led by “Broken Glass,” with Kim Petras, at No. 19. He has now charted 50 total tracks, the most of all acts, besting David Guetta’s 44. Kygo also claims 17 total top 10s, trailing only The Chainsmokers (19) and Calvin Harris (18). Kygo is currently in the top 10 with “Lose Somebody,” with OneRepublic, at No. 8.
Shifting to Dance/Mix Show Airplay, Trevor Daniel achieves his first top 10 with “Falling” (16-9), while Megan Thee Stallion earns her first top 10 with “Savage,” featuring Beyoncé (15-10).
