By virtue of Section 35. Para b (3) of RA 6975, otherwise known as DILG Act of 1990, the Police Security Unit (PSU) was created and later renamed to Police Security Command (PSC) pursuant to Headquarters Philippine National Police General Order Number 58 dated January 18, 1991. On November 12, 1996, the PSC was renamed to Police Security Command and Protection Office (PSPO) pursuant to NAPOLCOM Resolution Number 96094 but in order to align its identity with that of other NSUs of the Philippine National Police, PSPO was eventually changed to Police Security and Protection Group (PSPG) pursuant to NAPOLCOM Resolution Number 2008-256 dated April 10, 2008. 

Envisioned as a unit mandated to secure and protect  elected and appointed national government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and visiting foreign dignitaries, delegates and/or participants during special events, private individuals authorized to be given protection, and vital government installations, the unit also performs various functions such as providing support to the Presidential Security Group (PSG) in securing the President and the First Family; undertaking relative continuing studies and evolving plans on police security protection matters; and promulgating rules and regulations necessary to carry out the objectives, policies and functions of the Group.

Tracing its roots, the Group prides itself to have been led by 17 visionary police officers who helped build and became the main pillars of PSPG.
