Anyone else noticed NVMe 4K write speeds almost halved compared to win 10?

So i noticed that NVMe 4k random write speed are almost halved and read access time tripled in windows 11 compared to windows 10. I tried even in safe boot mode and same thing. Tests i used are AS SSD Benchmark and CrystalDiskMark 8. Drivers are updated and windows 11 build is 22000.176. Windows 10 version was 21H1.

Greetings, I am on the Microsoft file systems team and am investigating this issue.

Mussels84, would you please share the cmdline options you used to run the CrystalDiskMark 8 test so we can try and reproduce this in-house and address the issue.

Yes -- some press attention on this issue. Hopefully this will get MS to act (even mentions this thread):

C'mon man -- you posted and then run away? How about some more information?:

Tech news site now mentioning this issue:

Hello,

I have the same issue with latest W11 from dev or RC channel , the 4k IOPS write down by 7 time in CrystalMark 8, using 970 pro or SN850 compared to W11

partition (500MB) the IOPS is fine

my config is 5900x + MEG X570 ACE

I'm hitting this with a standard AS SSD bench run on my 980 Pro 2TB on W11. Downgrading to W10 fixes it immediately. Any ideas? This is so bad that there is no way I can use W11 with such degraded performance.

Hi, I'm also seeing this and would happy to provide diagnostic info if needed.

This is a brand new AMD Ryzen 7 5800X and a Samsung 980Pro running in PCI-e 4.

Pre updating to windows 11 this is the benchmarks that the Samsung Magician reported. https://imgur.com/a/yHBEbwt

Here is a benchmark this moirning, read and write speeds are fine, but the 4k random tests are halved. https://imgur.com/a/azwnORw

Same here on i7 10750h with Samsung 970 EVO and WD NVME. Speeds are multiple times slower on Windows 11. When I get back home from work I can try and provide more info for you.

I'm seeing the same thing with Windows 11. It appears that random write speeds are crippled by about 50% -- when compared to the same NVMe SSD running under Windows 10. I see this in Samsung Magician (Samsung's own SSD tool); and in CrystalDiskMark. I'm using a Samsung 970 evo plus SSD (2 TB).

Is MS working on a fix? What do you need to support getting this done? Post back here -- I'll provide it.

Many details on this issue in these multiple threads/forums:

Let us know if MS is working on a fix for this please! Thanks.

Hey Neochristi:

Its been 3 months since you posted here. Any progress on this issue? Thanks!

I am also having this issue with a machine using a crucial sata SSD. Reverted back to Windows 10 as the machine was running to a crawl.

You are correct, performance has tanked.

These benches were taken ~2 minutes apart, all running programs exited, AV disabled, both on microsoft NVME drivers.

Interestingly my WD black is almost not affected, it's running in "game mode" that prevents it powering down at idle, may be related.

Somethings weird for sure, when i test on smaller partitions (128GB) W11 performance tanks, on W10 it does not

Hopefully my red text makes it clear but just in case:

WD SN850 2TB (two partitions, 128GB and leftover)

Samsung 970 Pro 1TB (two partitions, 128GB and the rest)

The 970 Pro has the W11 OS on it, but when booted to it *both* 128GB partitions tank in performance for some reason.

The larger secondary partitions perform at full speed on both OS.

That is weird indeed. I dont have any other partitions on my disk, other than those that come when istalling win 11, and still 4k-64Thrd write speed suffer. Read access time goes up too in my setup for some reason. I have tried benchmarking different times and right after restart, or after idling like 2 hours, but same results. It seems that my sata ssd is unaffected. Same speeds and access times than on win 10. So is there maybe some incompatibilities with nvme drives on win 11? Hopefully this is understandable, because english is not my native language.

I am not sure compared to Winfows 10, but on a a brand new Windows 11 install (all updates installed) I get only about 280,000 IOPS for Random Write when doing the Samsung Magician benchmark. My Two other 980 Pros, which don't have Windows installed on them reach the full 1,000,000 IOPS.

Same.

Final update from me: i made my own thread as i tested a bunch of stuff, seeing anywhere from 5% to 388% faster results in windows 10, over windows 11.

Smaller partitions (128GB) get hit the hardest, has no correlation to the running OS drive.

Same here on a Windows 11 Clean Install.

Especially random write is extremely low on both my Samsung PCIe 4 NVME's.

On Windows 11 my Sk Hynix P31 fluctuate between 1700 to 2300 mbps in Crystaldiskmark. On Windows 10 it hits the advertised write speed of 3100 mbps every single time.

What is the time frame between tests? How much data is on the drives for each test?

Also, your results are nowhere near half, being a bit dramatic there.
