Shiva Singh was the most famous King often named in the poems of poet Vidyapati.He belonged to Oinwar ruling dynasty and known to have fought many battles.
Rise of Oinwar dynasty in Mithila
After a brief period of instability,the Oinwara’s began to control Darbhanga.This dynasty was also known as the Kameshwara, Thakura or the Sugauna dynasty.The Muslim conquerors who had conquered the whole of Mithila so far, did not interfered with these Hindu rulers.Kameshwara ,a resident of village Oini, near Pusa Road, was the founder of Oinwara dynasty.
The Oinwara dynasty is well-known for their encouragement of learning and fine arts. The prominent scholars of that age were Samkara, Vidyapati, Gadadhara, Vachaspati Misra, Amrtakara and Amiyakara.
How Samastipur got its name !
When Tirhut was divided into two parts by Haji Ilyas of Bengal, the king transferred his capital to Sugauna near Madhubani. In this way, the southern part of the district was under Haji Ilyas and the northern part under the Oinwaras.
Haji Shamsuddin Ilyas of Bengal founded the modern sub-division of Samastipur, though it was originally Shamsuddinpur, which later on became Samastipur.
Sultan Firuz Tughlaq was a close friend of Oinwar Bhogiswara and Vidyapati confirms this point. Birasingh and Kirtisingh of this dynasty went to Jaunpur along with Vidyapati to seek the help of Ibrahim Shah Sarqui against Arslan who had usurped power in Mithila.
The first king who fought for Independence
Dev Singh was the father of King Shiva Singh,.He was a strong and a powerful king who founded Deokuli, near Laheriasarai. The most known king of this dynasty was Shiva Singh who was a brave and fearless warrior.Raja Ganesha of Bengal was his friend. He asserted the independence of Mithila and issued gold coins in his name which was a significant step towards rising power and independence.Shiv Singh had his headquarters at the present site of Gajrathpur which is also known as SibaSinghpur.
However it is still a mystery in the history of Mithila that what happened, when the brave Shiva Singh was defeated by the Muslims.After the defeat of the king defeat and his wife Lakhima Devi and Vidyapati took refuge at the court of Dronwara Puraditya at Raja Banauli.
Descendants of Shiv Singh
After Shiva Singh came Padma Singh , Hari Singh and Nara Singh Deva whose inscription is yet visible on the sun temple at Kandaha in Saharsa.Nara Singh Dev was succeeded by Dhira Singh.
Another of his successor Bhairav Singh , was a very strong and powerful king .He like his predecessor , Shiva Singh , also asserted his independence and issued silver coins.These silver coins were discovered by Prof R K Choudhary and they have also been published.The coins are dated to the Saka Era.These coins are of much importance for the study of Oinwara history and chronology.
It is believed that Bhairav Singh defeated the representative of the Sultan of Bengal , Kedar Rai. He was succeeded by Rama Bhadra and the later by Laksmi Nath Kamsa Nrayana, whose capital at Kams Narayana Dih can still be located in the district Also, an important inscription of his time has also been discovered at Bhagirathpur in Darbhanga which gives an account of the condition of contemporary Mithila.
Hello, I just read this article and found it very important and informational. However, when I tried to trace the village oini in samastipur on google maps, i couldn’t find it. The closest result I found was a village in Siwan district with the same name.
Also I read some excerptsfrom a book named Anthropology of ancient hindu kingdoms written by Mr. Makhan jha in which he claims oini to be in tirhut commisionary in muzaffarpur.
So, if its possible please specify the exact location of the village “Oini” for the sake of convenience.
Also, there used to be a wikipedia page under the name of oinwar dynasty which has been deleted recently. As it was a great reliable source of info that has been deleted, I could not find any information regarding it.
p.s : If it helps , I am an “oini” descendant and I am looking for the village of my ancestors.
