NEW DELHI: Pushkar Singh Dhami will be the new chief minister of Uttarakhand.
The MLA from Khatima seat in Udham Singh Nagar district was elected leader of the BJP legislature party at a meeting of the party MLAs in Dehradun on Saturday afternoon.
He replaces Tirath Singh Rawat, who resigned late on Friday, after only four months in office.
At 45 years, Pushkar Singh Dhami will be the youngest to assume the office of chief minister in Uttarakhand.
"I accept the challenge and will take the support of everyone to take the party forward," Dhami said after the meeting of party MLAs.
Soon after being elected leader of the BJP legislature party, Dhami met state governor Baby Rani Maurya. He will take oath at 6pm on Sunday. Newly appointed Uttarakhand Cabinet Ministers will also take the oath with him, the governor's office said.

Rawat, a BJP MP from the Garhwal constituency, had to get elected to the the state assembly via bypoll to continue as chief minister. The house currently has two vacant seats- Haldwani and Gangotri.

However there were doubts on whether the Election Commission would conduct bypolls for the seats, as term of the current Uttarakhand assembly ends in less than a year, in March 2022.
That would have made Rawat's continuance as chief minister untenable.
Rawat was called to Delhi on Wednesday to meet BJP top brass. He returned to Dehradun Wednesday night. He then met governor Maurya at the Raj Bhavan and submitted his resignation.
