Dulene wore hers with pride as their boy became one of the standout stars of the tour and the Test series; Akker was more hesitant. On this day
In 1535 Melchiorite Anabaptists ran naked through the streets of Amsterdam, inspired by one of their prophets. The naaktlopers (naked walkers) refused clothing as they were escorted to prison. Capital punishment was meted out and imperial edicts issued against Anabaptism; in 1722 Bartholomew Roberts, a Welsh pirate known as Black Bart, was killed by grapeshot from HMS Swallow, whose captain, Chaloner Ogle, was rewarded with a knighthood. Roberts took more than 400 prizes during the Golden Age of Piracy and created his own pirate code and flags. He died aged 39, buried at sea off Gabon, west Africa, with his arms and ornaments; in 1942 the first golden disc was awarded to Glenn Miller and his Orchestra for Chattanooga Choo Choo. It was a publicity stunt, with RCA spraying gold lacquer on a master disc. The Recording Industry Association of America trademarked the Gold and Platinum awards: on March 14, 1958, Perry Como’s Catch a Falling Star became the first gold single; on July 8, 1958, Gordon McRae’s Oklahoma soundtrack became the first gold album; in 1952 part-results of India’s first general election were announced. The Indian National Congress party, led by Jawaharlal Nehru, went on to win 364 out of 489 seats. Nehru was prime minister until his death on May 27, 1964.
Nature notes
The brown reeds rattle in the wind; a light lid of ice covers the cobalt-blue water. A huge white bird wades out into the tarn and begins to fish. It is a great white egret. Far larger than the increasingly common little egret, great white egrets are infrequent winter visitors to Britain, although a few pairs are now breeding here. They are anglers nonpareil. Their yellow beak can strike with a rattlesnake’s speed, their long, slender neck gives them a lengthy reach, and their stilt-like legs allow them to paddle out from shore to where the larger prey swims. But the great egret’s best fishing facet is its patience.
