Islanders Prospect Report

Despite having a prospect in all three CHL League Final series, the Islanders will not be represented in the 2016 Memorial Cup. Mathew Barzal (Seattle, WHL), Anthony Beauvillier (Shawinigan, QMJHL) and Joshua Ho-Sang (Niagara, OHL) all fell short of their respective league titles and a chance to play for the Memorial Cup, given to the CHL Champion.

Regardless of the outcome, all three prospects led their respective teams in points during their playoff runs. Barzal, 18, led the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL playoffs with 26 points (5G, 21A) in 18 postseason games. The Islanders’ 2015 first-round pick (16th overall) and Seattle alternate captain, set playoff career-highs in every category and ranked second in the WHL playoffs with 21 assists. The Thunderbirds closed out their season with an 8-4 loss in Game 5 of the WHL finals as they fell to the Brandon Wheat Kings in five games.

Anthony Beauvillier, 18, also set career-highs this postseason with 30 points (15G, 15A) in 21 games with the Shawinigan Cataractes of the QMJHL. Along with leading the Cataractes in points this postseason, the Islanders’ 2015 first-rounder (28th overall) and Shawinigan captain ranked second in QMJHL playoffs points. On Thursday, Beauvillier and the Cataractes lost 7-2 in Game 5 to fall in the Presidents Cup Final to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.

Joshua Ho-Sang, 20, paced the Niagara IceDogs with 26 points (6G, 20A) in 17 OHL playoff games this postseason. Ho-Sang, the Islanders’ 2014 first-round pick (28th overall) added his 26 postseason points to his 82 regular-season points to surpass the 100-point mark for the first time in his four seasons in the OHL. On Wednesday, the IceDogs were swept out of the playoffs as they fell 1-0 to the London Knights.

The ECHL regular season Champion, Missouri Mavericks, are no longer in the hunt for the Kelly Cup. The Allen Americans downed the Mavs in six games to advance to the Western Conference Final. Missouri’s 2015-16 season was one to remember, as the Mavs were the only ECHL team to post 100 points during the regular season. The Mavs will open the 2016-17 in season in October against the Americans for a chance to redeem this year’s postseason loss.
