DRDO test fired AD-1 interceptor of BMD Phase-II on 3rd November 2022

How the AD-1 interceptor of BMD Phase-II will secure the airspace of India against enemy ballistic missiles

India had successfully carried out the maiden flight test of AD-1 long range interceptor missile of the Phase-II Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) program on 3rdNovember, which saw the participation of all BMD weapon system elements located at different geographical locations.

The AD-1 is propelled by a two-stage solid motor and is outfitted with an advanced control system navigation and guidance algorithm to precisely guide the vehicle to the target the AD-1 is designed for low exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric interception of enemy ballistic missiles that are flying in the range of 1,500 kilometers to 3,000 kilometers.

The second interceptor missile of the BMD Phase-II program known as AD-2 is also under development that can destroy enemy ballistic missiles that are flying in the range of 5,000 kilometers or beyond.

Here you all should know that India has already deployed Phase-1 Interceptors of the BMD and its associated radars, sensors and tracking elements at various parts of the country, the Phase-II will use the same infrastructure elements of the Phase-I but with better interceptor missiles for accuracy.

DRDO is also developing ship based version of the Phase-II BMD interceptors AD-1 and AD-2 for deployment onboard India’s future Next Generation Destroyers like the American SM-2 and SM-3 Anti Ballistic Interceptors.

We have seen various defence experts and websites who have claimed that AD-1 has demonstrated hypersonic missile interception capability in this test as it is said to have intercepted a Mach 10 class target missile with Mach 7 speed of its own, although IgMp can not confirm these sources as authentic as of now, but it is certain that India has taken a giant leap forward with this test in the arena of Ballistic Missile interception and securing its airspace from enemy ballistic missiles.
