On this day
In 1535 the former lord chancellor Thomas More was beheaded on Tower Hill, London, for refusing to accept King Henry VIII as head of the Church of England from Rome and his divorce from Catherine of Aragon; in 1813 the anti-slavery campaigner Granville Sharp died, aged 77. In 1768 he won a test-case for an enslaved black teenager in London and set up a colony of free slaves in Sierra Leone, becoming distressed to learn that many of the settlers later worked in the slave trade; in 1941 London Calling Europe was first broadcast by the BBC to occupied Europe, always beginning with “This is London calling”; in 1964 Nyasaland gained independence from Britain and was renamed Malawi; in 1988 explosions on the North Sea oil rig Piper Alpha killed 167 men. The platform accounted for about 10 per cent of North Sea oil and gas production.
Nature notes
The rain arrived, and so did the birdsong. After a night of downpours, the village song thrushes began to sing again. For the past few, dry weeks, these keen musicians had limited themselves to rather half-hearted vocal displays. Their time had been taken up with finding snails to feed to their nestlings — snails are the drought food of thrushes. Research published in the Biological Journal of the Linnean Society revealed that the shattered snail shells scattered around a thrush’s anvil are an important calcium source for the females of other bird species. Great tits, blue tits and blackbirds are among 54 species recorded eating the shell fragments to boost their egg-laying capacities.
