Succession, The Last of Us, and The White Lotus Sweep the 2023 Emmy Nominations

From an Abbott Elementary slow burn, to Kendall Roy looking sadly upon various bodies of water, to series finales for a whole host of shows about middle-aged white guys — Succession, Barry, and Ted Lasso (allegedly) — the nominations for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards are in. To be eligible, shows had to air between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023. Already iconic series like Succession and The Crown were shoe-ins for nominations, but the past year also welcomed new shows like Jury Duty, The Bear, Beef, and Daisy Jones & the Six, all of which were (surprisingly — I’m looking at you Daisy Jones) nominated for multiple awards. As always, the Television Academy found a way to shock us, this time with a bevy of Jury Duty nominations and near-total domination by The White Lotus in the Best Supporting Actor and Actress categories.

Yvette Nicole Brown (A Black Lady Sketch Show) and Frank Scherma (the Television Academy chairman) hosted the nominations, which were broadcast on the Television Academy website at 11:30 a.m. on July 12 despite looming questions about the impact of the ongoing WGA strike and potential SAG-AFTRA strike. Succession swept the nominations with 27, including three for Lead Actor in a Drama Series. The Last of Us and The White Lotus had nearly the same amount of nominations, 24 and 23, respectively. Notably, The White Lotus earned half of the nominations for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (the other half being given to Succession) and five out of eight nomination slots in the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category. For the second year in a row, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Janelle James both were nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for their performances in Abbott Elementary, which earned eight nominations total. Quinta Brunson, who created the show and won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series last year, was not nominated in the category this time (What’s that smell? Oh! I think it’s … snub?) but earned another nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. HBO/Max unsurprisingly garnered the most clout with its mountain of nods — Succession, The Last of Us, and The White Lotus were the dominating holy trinity of nominated shows — but only time (and the Television Academy) will tell who the winners will be. At the end of the livestream, Scherma acknowledged the strike, saying he hopes an equitable resolution will be found for both parties, but he made no indication that the strike(s) would impact the awards show, which is slated to air September 18 at 8 p.m. on Fox.
