BESSEMER CITY, N.C. — A fire tore through the Livent Lithium Processing Plant in Bessemer City early Monday morning, causing road closures and recommendations for some residents to stay indoors. 

The three-alarm fire happened about 1:30 a.m. at the plant, located along Bessemer City-Kings Mountain Highway. Gaston County officials say smoke from the fire is not especially hazardous. 

"Officials have confirmed that all plant workers are accounted for," Gaston County officials said. No injuries have been reported. 

Highway 161 was closed from JE Herndon Access Road to 14th Street, but reopened shortly before 8:30 a.m.

"Residents near the plant are encouraged to stay indoors and not drive around barricades," Gaston County officials said.

As of 7 a.m., fire crews were still working to contain the fire. 

The cause of the fire has not been released.
