In 1976 the “Gang of Four” was arrested on the order of Hua Guofeng, the new leader of China’s Communist Party. The “gang” included Jian Qing, the widow of Chairman Mao Zedong, who died on September 9, 1976; in 1979 Pope John Paul II became the first pope to visit the White House, as the guest of President Jimmy Carter, at an event attended by 6,000 invited guests; in 1981 Anwar Sadat, the president of Egypt since 1970, was assassinated during a military parade in Cairo, by rebel soldiers armed with AK47 automatic rifles and hand grenades; in 1985 PC Keith Blakelock was stabbed to death by a mob during the Broadwater Farm housing estate riots in Tottenham, north London. Another officer was shot and injured.
Nature notes
Throughout September the hops filled this North Yorkshire lane with their delicious aroma. Clambering high into the hedge of hawthorn and elm, their thimble-sized, cone-shaped flowers were largely hidden in the foliage of these trees, but their scent was so strong that even passing motorists got a whiff. Cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians enjoyed the full effect of the zestful scent. Slowly these light-green flowers turned brown, and now they are ripe. Hops not only give flavour to ale, they also have bacteriostatic properties, making the brew safer to drink for longer. Traditionally, half an ounce was used to flavour every gallon. Hops were also once used to treat anxiety.
