The Easter bank holiday weekend is in full swing, meaning many people will be stocking up on chocolate treats.

Supermarkets across Ireland have had eggs on offer in the lead up to Easter Sunday, which takes place on Sunday, March 31 this year.

Cadbury Creme Eggs have been on shelves for several months now and are a firm favourite with chocolate lovers.

How you eat a Creme Egg can spark a controversial conversation. Some like to lick the middle bit slowly and then enjoy the chocolate outside, while others prefer to down it in one.

But lots of people haven't thought about what the 'goo' inside is actually made from. It seems to be perplexing internet users, who have been wondering what they have been munching on.

One person took to X, formerly Twitter, to ask the important question: "I have a huge problem weighing on my mind: what is the substance in the middle of a Creme Egg called? What is it? A goo?"

Another asked: "I have a question. What is the goo made from in a Creme Egg?"

The debate continued on TikTok, where Creme Egg fans were equally mystified. One person said: "I always thought the inside was coloured caramel."

Someone else commented: "What's inside them? Toothpaste? Frosting?"

Cadbury describe their product as "a milk chocolate shell with a soft fondant centre".

The fondant is supposed to mimic the yolk and egg white of a real egg, hence why the ‘goo’ is both white and yellow.

As the name indicates, the ingredients actually contain dried egg whites.

Cadbury lists the ingredients as sugar, milk, glucose syrup, cocoa butter, inverted sugar syrup, dried whey, vegetable fats and dried egg white.

Meanwhile, social media users have also been reacting to the sugar content in a Creme Egg. It contains over 6.5 teaspoons of total sugar, 6 grams of fat and over 170 calories per egg.

One person wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "Just found out that Cadbury’s Creme Eggs have got loads of sugar in them. Really upset about this, had no idea."

Another joked: "As a lover of Cadbury creme eggs (and sugar in general) I consider it a great feat of strength that I’ve only eaten one today. #myteethhurt."

While, for another fan, it was business as usual: "Went out for breakfast and when they asked how I wanted my eggs, I asked for Cadbury Creme."
