In Heinz Field, the Pittsburgh Panthers have one of the finest football stadiums in the country to call home.

  • Situated just north of Pittsburgh's Point State Park, the horseshoe shaped stadium seats 65,000 people and provides a stunning view of the city's breathtaking skyline and three rivers. Among its amenities are 122 luxury suites.

  • Heinz Field has a grass surface that stretches over two acres. One of the interesting features of Heinz's grass field is its underground heating system. The heating system (24 heat sensors monitor temperature) is activated when the root zone (surface below sod) drops below 60 degrees. Approximately 35 miles of tubing runs in loops underneath the field. This aids in maintenance and growth.

  • The Coca-Cola Great Hall is a 40,000-square feet showpiece for Western Pennsylvania football, both past and present. It features memorabilia, interactive display columns and huge murals depicting the rich history of football in the region and at the University of Pittsburgh.

  • The Panthers have their own expansive, private locker area at Heinz, the Duratz Locker Room. The plush dressing area spans nearly 5000 square feet and has custom-made oak lockers for 125 players.

  • The sightlines for fans are tremendous. On the sidelines, the field is just 60 feet away from the first row of seats. In the end zones, the distance is just 25 feet.

  • Hungry? No problem. There are 32 concession stands at Heinz Field. Additionally, there are seven team stores and 15 novelty stands to pick up your favorite Pittsburgh football gear.

  • There are over 400 television sets in Heinz Field and two video walls. The scoreboard video display measures 48 feet by 27 feet at a minimum. It has a 96-feet by 27-feet expansion capability.

The University of Pittsburgh holds the distinction of playing the very first official football game at Heinz Field. The following lists the stadium's "firsts," all achieved by the Panthers.

Touchdown: David Priestley, 85-yard run, 8:38 of the first quarter

Passing Touchdown: R.J. English catches a 12-yard pass from David Priestley, 9:07 of the third quarter

Field Goal: Nick Lotz, 20-yard field goal, 2:02 of the fourth quarter

Interception: Ramon Walker, 9:55 of the second quarter, returned 18 yards

Quarterback Sack: Amir Purifoy sacks Matt Wilhjelm for loss of five yards, 6:43 of the second quarter

The state-of-the-art training facility, which includes the Duratz Athletic Complex, features expansive training rooms, team meeting and film-viewing rooms, weight rooms and dining facilities. It additionally houses coaching and administrative staff offices as well as the Panthers' academic support personnel. In short, the Duratz Athletic Complex has everything a football player could ever need or want to reach his potential!

    The UPMC Sports Performance Complex

  • The Panthers football team has direct access to the finest sports medicine care in the world. The complex features a 35,000-square-foot clinical, teaching and research facility and a 100,000-square-foot indoor center for patient rehabilitation. Physicians and orthopaedic surgeons will see patients on-site. Additionally, the patient facility has a therapeutic pool, complete radiology and laboratory services, and a high-tech motion analysis lab to assess the extent of injury and recovery.

  • Housed in the Duratz Athletic Complex, Pittsburgh's Hall of Fame is a shrine that pays homage to the Panthers' storied football past. From the Heisman Trophy won by Tony Dorsett in 1976 to glass encased lockers of legendary Panthers players, the Hall of Fame is full of memorabilia from a proud and rich tradition.

  • Each Panthers coach has their own expansive meeting room for their positional players complete with state-of-the-art video capabilities. The quarterback meeting area was named the "Dan Marino Room" in honor of the former Panthers quarterback and Hall of Famer. The dedication was made in November 2000 when Marino returned to his alma mater for a special ceremony honoring his retirement from the NFL.

  • The Pittsburgh Panthers have access to three practice fields at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex. The Panthers have two outdoor grass fields with lighting, which allow for night workouts. Additionally, the complex's indoor practice facility features a three-lane track and FieldTurf, a revolutionary playing surface that provides all of the safety and playing characteristics of natural grass.

  • Pittsburgh's locker room features 128 spacious lockers which are personalized for each Panthers player.

    The UPMC Sports Performance Complex

  • The Hearst Academic Center for Student-Athletes features a computer lab and student reference library. A full-time academic counselor and graduate assistant are on hand to help the Panthers reach their highest potential in the classroom.

  • The Panthers' spacious weight room is furnished with the very latest in training equipment and is utilized year-round for both offseason and in-season lifting regimens.

Completed in the spring of 2002, the Petersen Events Center will provide the Panthers basketball team with an advantage like no other. The venue promises to be one of the finest college basketball arenas in the country, providing the very best for players and fans alike.

Additionally, the Petersen Events Center dramatically enhances the quality of student life on campus, providing the university with a location for graduation ceremonies, modern recreation and fitness facilities and the new home for Panthers basketball.

Among the Petersen Events Center highlights:

  • a private basketball complex - Housed in the Petersen Events Center is a private basketball complex that allows for games and practices to occur simultaneously.

  • unparalleled seating accommodations - The Petersen Events Center boasts 12,500 seats. Pittsburgh's student body circles the court with 1,500 seats right next to the action. Also included are 2,000 club seats, 48 courtside seats, four courtside luxury suites, one special event courtside suite, 12 club level luxury suites and college basketball's finest club lounge.

  • An expansive student recreation center - The new center features four racquetball courts and two squash courts, along with Cybex weight machines, a large free weight area, state-of-the-art aerobic area complete with tread mills and bikes, a Health Assessment Area, an aerobics classroom and a martial arts practice room.

  • A unique restaurant row - The building features nine major concession areas with 66 total points of sale. The restaurant row will be open daily as well as on game day.

  • willis center for academics for student athletes - The Willis Center for Academics will house everything a student-athlete may need to help them achieve academic success at Pittsburgh, including a computer lab with approximately 20 computers, a writing lab, a math/science area, individual tutor rooms, a career resource area and media room.

  • The McCarl Panthers Hall of Fame - Panthers fans can head to the McCarl Hall of Fame to visit this grand showcase for Pittsburgh's illustrious athletic achievements, both past and present.

  • The PJ Dick Panthers Authentic Store - Pittsburgh's official team store will be open daily to allow fans to purchase their favorite Panthers apparel.

    Fitzgerald Field House

  • Fitzgerald Field House serves as the home for several of Pittsburgh's sports, including volleyball, gymnastics, wrestling and indoor track and field.

  • Built in 1951, Fitzgerald Field House was named for Rufus H. Fitzgerald, Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh from 1944-55. Fitzgerald Field House, which as a capacity of 6,798, has been drastically improved as a result of major renovations over the last few years.

  • It has housed such events as the NCAA Northeast Regional Gymnastics Championships, several Big East Volleyball Championship events, as well as the Eastern Wrestling League Championships.

    FITZGERALD FIELD HOUSE WEIGHT ROOM

  • Fitzgerald Field House is equipped with a training facility featuring Hammer Strength and Nautilus Next Generation machines. It additionally boasts nearly 8,600 pounds of free weights that add to the variety of the Panthers' strength and conditioning programs. The weight room also features a comprehensive cardiovascular unit, including treadmills, stationary bikes and the Stairmaster Gauntlet for a full-body workout.

    FITZGERALD FIELD HOUSE LOCKER ROOMS

  • One of the newest and most attractive additions to the Fitzgerald Field House are the spacious new locker rooms for the Panthers' Olympic Sports teams. Added in 1999, the locker rooms include pro-style individual wooden lockers and audiovisual systems for exclusive use by the Panthers. The new locker rooms provide an impressive home for Pittsburgh's athletes.

  • Trees Hall and Trees Pool opened in 1962 and at that time featured one pool and a large gym. One year later, a smaller gym and smaller pool were added to the facility. The 75-by-165 foot Olympic size pool (which has a 770,000 gallon capacity) has the dual capability of an eight-lane, 50-meter course or a 20-lane 25-yard course. The diving area is well equipped with two one-meter and two three-meter durafirm stands with maxiflex boards, in addition to multiple diving towers with a 16-foot water depth.

  • Trees Pool has served as the Panthers' swimming and diving teams' home pool. In 1998, Pittsburgh hosted its 15th Big East Conference championship in the facility.

  • Trees Hall has seen recent renovations. In 1999, the gymnasium floors were resurfaced to provide a secondary practice facility for many of the Panthers teams.

  • Located behind the Cost Sports Center with a striking view of the downtown skyline is Trees Field, home of the Pittsburgh Panthers baseball team. Prior to the 1999 season, the park underwent a renovation worth over $500,000, including the installation of a brand new major league-caliber astroturf infield and lights. In addition, two all-purpose astroturf fields adjoin Trees Field allowing for an additional practice area.

Charles L. Cost Center

  • The Charles L. Cost Center is one of the newest additions to the Panthers athletic complex. The indoor athletic facility is spacious enough to house a regulation football field or nine tennis courts.

  • The Cost Center was recently resurfaced with a new Astroturf surface and has served as an indoor practice facility for the Panthers football, baseball and softball teams.

  • The facility was named after former running back Charles L. "Corky" Cost who donated an excess of $1 million for its construction.
