The range of superlatives to describe Amitabh Bachchan has
been long exhausted by his fans. From a gawky young man who
entered Bollywood more than three decades ago to the superstar
status he enjoys today, the journey to being a legend has
been a remarkable one.
Amit Shrivastava (Amitabh's birth name) was born in Allahabad
on Octorber 11, 1942. The boy was destined to be India's biggest
superstar ever. Today he is famous all over the world as the
Big B of Bollywood.
Son of well known poet Late Shri Harivansh Rai Bachchan and
married to Jaya Bhaduri, Amitabh is father of two children -
Shweta and Abhishek. |
Before
coming into acting he had worked as a stage actor, radio announcer
and freight company executive in Kolkata.
Saat Hindustani in 1969 launched him in the Hindi Cinema.
From there he worked hard to succeed and finally became a superstar
with Zanjeer in 1973. Zanjeer made him famous
as the Angry Young Man.
Succeeding inbecoming the personification of the angst that
wracked Indian society in the 1970s, his acceptance by the masses
reached unprecedented levels. That he was India's best known
figure became apparent when he was hurt in an accident in 1982,
an event that had millions of fans praying for his recovery.
A roght patch later, today he owns a commercial enterprise Amitabh
Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL) which is engaged in production,
distribution and all other aspects of the movie industry. Big
B has also presented the Indian version of Who Wants To Be
A Millionaire? called Kaun Banega Crorepati? on television.
He is also the first Asian actor with a wax model of his
likeness displayed at Madame Tussaud's in London. He is also
the highest paid Bollywood actor starting with Rs 5000 in
Saat Hindustani (1969) and today charging $1,000,000!
Some of his recent hits include Mohabbatein (2000),
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Baghban (2003)
and Khakee (2004). The actor shows no signs of slowing
down even at the age of over 60 years. Today he is one of
the most busiest actors in Bollywood.
