Amund Ringnes Island

Amund Ringnes Island

Amund Ringnes Island (5,255 km²) forms part of the Sverdrup Islands subgroup of the Queen Elizabeth Islands group. Situated in the northwestern regions of the high Arctic zone, Amund Ringnes Island lies between the larger islands of Axel Heiberg (43 km to the east, across the Massey Sound) and Ellef Ringnes (28 km to the west, across the Hassel Sound). To the south, 15 km across the Hendriksen Strait, sits the smaller Cornwall Island (visible at bottom right of the above image). Also seen in the image is Haig-Thomas Island, located off the eastern coast of Amund Ringnes.

The island is of low relief with average elevations of between 50 m and 100 m above sea level, with low gradient slopes that grade smoothly to the coast. The highest terrain is found in the northeast inland from Andersen Bay where a ridge feature reaches a height of 265 m. The 114 km by 60 km island is roughly rectangular in shape, with its outline indented by two large bays: Geologist Bay on the northeast coast and Temprerance Bay on the southwest coast.
