The 53-year-old actor, who reprises his role as action hero Ethan Hunt for the fifth time in the new movie, was ever the professional as he was mobbed by enthusiastic fans at the city's Haneda International Airport upon his arrival.

He dressed comfortably for the journey, opting for a black tee and jeans which he teamed with a casual grey jacket and black leather shoes.

The Top Gun star hid his tired eyes from the throng of excited fans, choosing to keep his sunglasses on as he made his way through arrivals with a marker pen in his hand.

Seeming to be genuinely touched by the turnout, Tom was more than happy to spend time with the crowd despite his hectic promo schedule.

Flying in from South Korea, the screen star is in town for a press conference ahead of the movie's Japan premiere, which will be held in downtown Tokyo on Monday.

Tom's trip overseas comes after his 22-year-old assistant Emily Thomas quashed rumours that the pair of them were dating by revealing that she already has a boyfriend.

The pretty brunette changed her profile picture on Facebook to a snap of herself and her 25-year-old boyfriend Alex Roberts after reports claimed the Hollywood star, who is more than 30 years her senior, had fallen for her.

Reports in the US had even suggested Tom was preparing to propose.

And while Tom has kept schtum on the matter the British beauty took matters into her own hands when she paraded the snap of her and her boyfriend on a romantic holiday on the social networking site.

The pair, who have been dating for five months, were subject to jokey comments from friends who, referring to the Cruise rumours, said that Mr Roberts 'looks different in the movies'.

Miss Thomas, an investment banker's daughter from Hertfordshire, became Cruise's assistant while working on the new Mission Impossible film.

According to reports, he was so impressed that he asked her to work with him on his next movie Mena, which recently went in to post-production.

It was also noted that she will be working with the star when he shoots his next Jack Reacher movie.

A source told Star magazine last week: 'Tom has fallen head over heels for Emily, and she feels the same way. There's even buzz in his inner circle that he might propose!'

'Tom was so impressed with her, he made it clear he wanted her to work with him on all his upcoming projects,' it was added.

Miss Thomas went to £4,000-a-term Abbot's Hill girls' school in Hemel Hempstead, before going to Aldenham School in Elstree, which charges £10,000 a term.
