The Walking Dead season six will feature 'internal conflict' and time jumps while return of Wolves gang brings double threat alongside zombie walkers

The Walking Dead will not return with new episodes until October, but the first hints of what is to come have been released.

Three of the show's main characters - Rick, Carol, and Daryl - featured on the cover of August 7's issue of Entertainment Weekly, which included spoilers and photos for the upcoming season six.

While Carol - played by Melissa McBride, 50 - ominously offered a cookie to readers in the cover photograph, the zombie show's stars and producers teased internal conflict, time jumps, and the arrival of the Wolves

Tensions within Alexandria will be a big issue in the new season, and not just because Rick Grimes killed Pete at the end of season five.

According to actor Norman Reedus, there will be 'a lot of internal conflict. A lot of characters that you didn't see having beef are starting to have beef - there's a lot of mistrust.'

That mistrust will create divisions between 'them' and 'us,' star Andrew Lincoln told the magazine, explaining that the characters' journeys would go 'from them to us.'

Time jumps will also be a feature of the new season, with stories focusing on Morgan's (Lennie James) 'transformation' from crazy man to pacifist and on Alexandria's background.

'We open right in the middle of this heightened action sequence, and we then jump around in that time frame to allow the audience to put together in their own minds what it is that we actually just saw,' said executive producer and director Greg Nicotero of the premiere episode.

Fans of the Walking Dead comic books may be happy as well: 'There are some stories filled in regards to the comic that we haven't even gotten to yet - sort of prequeling some comic stories that are coming up,' explained showrunner Scott M. Gimple.

As for the Wolves - the ominous and murderous survivors teased throughout season five - they are expected to get extra air time, although those involved with the show remained cagey about their role.

Photos released for the new season showed several characters engaged in tense survival.

Glenn (Steve Yeun) was shown with a cut across his face, apparently firing a gun, while Heath (Corey Hawkins) patrolled an alley with his own gun at the ready.

Rick seemed to be in command of a truck, while Daryl walked around with his always-present crossbow.

The Walking Dead season six will premiere on AMC on October 11.
