The Queen beamed as she reminisced with D Day veterans about their experiences during the commemorations today.

The royal, 93, spent time speaking to men and women who served during the 1944 landings while attending the 75th anniversary event at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Southsea Common this afternoon. 

The monarch, who was 18 at the time of the landings, reminisced with some who took part, asking them about who they served with and what they remembered.

Stopping to speak to one veteran who refueled Navy ships, the monarch is thought to have quipped: 'I thought you were going to tell me you had a bomb!,' prompting several people - including the man in question - to burst into laughter. 

While the exact conversation cannot be heard, it is thought the man replied: 'I used to say clear off, clear off, don’t want you there,' making the monarch chuckle.

The Queen spoke to several other veterans present. Speaking to another man, the Queen quipped: 'You don't have to tell me that!,' although it is not known what they are discussing. 

During the same conversation she also brings up her son-in-law, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Lawrence, saying: 'Tim Lawrence told me he was going.'

It is thought the comment refers to his attendance at part of the commemorations later today. 

The Queen has joined world leaders including President Trump, Theresa May, Emmanuel Macron, Angela Merkel, Justin Trudeau and 300 heroes who survived D-Day to mark the 75th anniversary of the invasion of France. 

The monarch looks vibrant in a bright pink outfit for the occasion, wearing a floral dress under her coat and accessorising her outfit with her statement pearl earrings and a necklace.

The Queen was dressed for summer in her fuchsia pink outfit and added some shine to it with pretty buttons and a broach. She later put on some sunglasses to shield her eyes from the sun.

She joined other well dressed guests - including Melania Trump, who opted for chic neutral shades, with a full length wool coat from luxurious fashion label The Row and an elegant asymmetric Philip Treacy disc hat worn at an angle. 

Other guests at the event included Australia's prime minister Scott Morrison, prime minister Charles Michel from Belgium, the Czech Republic's prime minister Andrej Babis and president Prokopis Pavlopoulos from Greece. Chancellor Angela Merkel represented Germany.

Later on the Queen paid tribute to the 'resilient wartime generation' - she called 'my generation' - and said: 'Seventy-five years ago, hundreds of thousands of young soldiers, sailors and airmen left these shores in the cause of freedom.

'Many of them would never return, and the heroism, courage and sacrifice of those who lost their lives will never be forgotten. 

It is with humility and pleasure, on behalf of the entire country - indeed the whole free world - that I say to you all, thank you.'

 Afterwards Her Majesty, Prince Charles, the President and First Lady Melania met D-Day veterans and their families. 

This afternoon The President and First Lady fly to Ireland where they will meet Taoiseach Leo Varadkar before staying at Mr Trump's Doonbeg luxury hotel in Clare.

The Queen also met Trump on the first day of his visit on Monday - where she welcomed him and wife Melania for lunch and then for a state banquet at Buckingham Palace in the evening.

There they joined other royals including The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as well as Trump's family. 

President Trump heaped praise on the Queen at the state dinner in Buckingham Palace on Monday night after a whirlwind day with the British royal family. 

President Trump spoke glowingly of the friendship between the US and the UK and described the 93-year-old monarch as a 'great, great woman'.
