Erasure's Vince Clarke and Heaven 17's Martyn Ware experiment with 3D soundscape
Friends from Martyn Ware's production of Erasure's I
Say I Say I Say, these two were commissioned by Sheffield's National Centre
For Popular Music to produce music for its hi-tech auditorium, where 3D soundfields
are the order of the day. The eight long tracks - mostly slow, synthesised instrumentals
- use melodic themes, plus intermittent rhythms and effects (sirens, jets, African
chants etc), but offer little that Vangelis or various chill-out acts haven't
done before. Mildly diverting at best, these doodles leave the overwhelming impression
that their point was to employ the effects, rather than create anything of intrinsic
worth.
