Peruvian singer's sultry second album on David Byrne's label
Produced in Peru by Craig Street, known for his work with Cassandra Wilson
and Me’Shell Ndegéocello, Eco De Sombras showcases Susana Baca’s pure, melancholic
vocals alongside a cool backdrop of Spanish guitar, percussion and bass.
De Los Amores and Valentin provide spirited openers, the latter adding
electric guitar to the mix, while Panalivio/Zancudito benefits from double
bass and pedal steel additions from North American guests Greg Leisz and Greg
Cohen. Three late-night ballads and the powerful, accordion-led La Macorina
underscore the melancholy of Baca’s music, but when she lightens up, as
on the sparkier Xanahari, the world seems a better place.
