Max Payne Status Update
7/19/01 15:35 PST | Max Payne News | Abe Rahey
3D Realms' George Broussard just updated his .plan file with a detailed Max Payne status update. Here are some tidbits:
- Max Payne has been in duplication since July 16th.
- As of tomorrow, July 20th, the bulk of the boxes will have been assembled and ready for shipping.
- The final boxes should start to hit the trucks on July 23rd and will arrive in stores around the 26th (in the US).
- 3DR pre-orders should be shipped very early next week, as we get our shipment from Take 2 on Monday.
He also mentioned that they're currently working on the demo and that you can expect it to be out a couple weeks after the game hits the store shelves. It'd probably weigh in at 120mb or so. Read more here.

Max Payne and Win2k / XP
7/19/01 15:17 PST | Max Payne News | Abe Rahey
Since we're on the topic of Max Payne (*grin*) I figured this might be of interest to those of you running Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Here's what Sami Vanhatalo of Remedy Entertainment had to say on the 3D Realms forums regarding whether or not Max Payne runs on those two platforms:
Max runs happily on Windows 2000 and Windows XP and even supports the XP's "Switch User while leaving all your software open" features (unofficially since XP isn't out yet).
While on the subject, the game has an option to enable/disable task switching (Alt-Tab, Ctrl-Esc etc). It's disabled by default. Mod makers etc probably want to run the game in a window while taskswitching to check documentation etc, but a lot of end-users were accidentally pressing Alt-Tab and ended up on the desktop.

DNF Mac Unconfirmed
7/19/01 4:07 PST | Duke Nukem Forever News | Lucky
Joe Siegler from 3D Realms let me know that, contrary to the release from MacSoft the other day, nothing has actually been signed so far in accordance with Duke Forever and Max Payne appearing on the Mac (although that doesn't outrule ports after the game ships on PC). Furthermore, Max Payne has only been announced on the PlayStation 2 so far.

Payneful Scott Miller Interview
7/16/01 5:39 PST | Max Payne News | Lucky
VoodooExtreme have an interview up with Scott Miller talking about Max Payne's production and future plans. Here's a quote:Voodoo Extreme -- Lets forget you're the prez of 3D Realms for a moment: As a gamer, what in Max Payne appeals to you?
Scott Miller --- The story is number one on my list. When you finish the game you’ll feel like you’ve been the main character in a novel, actually living the story. I can’t think of any other action game that has made me feel this way.
The cinematic-styled action also sets Max apart. This game sets a new standard in that department, and more important, it’s a key part of the gameplay, not something you just watch.
The interview also goes over the possibility of a sequel, console ports, and demo plans - check it out here!

Hands-on Max Payne Preview
7/14/01 10:33 PST | Max Payne News | Abe Rahey
As promised, Steve Gibson at Shacknews has put up his own preview of Max Payne. Here's a little snip regarding what he thought about the game as a whole:
On a scale of 1-10 6 being a "passing grade worth picking up once it's in the bargain bin" and 10 being naked chicks showing up at my door telling me I won 10million dollars holding a copy of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.
I'd give the game a 9.1
You heard the man! Be sure to check out the rest of the preview here. And stay tuned for his interview with some Remedy guys as well as a short video.

Max Payne Preview / Interview
7/13/01 16:21 PST | Max Payne News | Abe Rahey
The folks at Stomped have put up their own preview of 3D Realms and Remedy Entertainment's upcoming Max Payne (now available for pre-orders). In addition to the preview, they've included a short interview with Petri Järvilehto, project leader at Remedy. Here's a snip:
How has the game changed since the ideas for the game were first fleshed out?
Petri: Max has evolved a lot from the original plans. We've been pretty true to the original character, but as we've gone further into the project, we've also raised the bar higher and gone for a lot more ambitious targets than what we originally planned.

Memorable Weapons
7/9/01 13:07 PST | Community News | Lucky
There's a new Top 10 on the 'Spy, and it's Gaming's Top 10 Most Memorable Weapons. As you've perhaps figured out, some of Duke Nukem 3D's artillery makes it into there - to be exact, two weapons do! Here's a snip from the Microwave Gun, clocking in at number 10:
Duke Nukem is THE action hero of the pseudo-3D game. After the original game was released, 3D Realms released the Plutonium Pak, which included, in addition to the usual assortment of levels, a great new weapon: the Microwave gun. When you shot somebody with this weapon they would puff up to like 5 bajillion times their normal size before exploding into a nice big ooey-gooey mess. Yummy.
Check out the Top 10 most memorable weapons here!

God Dang Co-Op Review Boy!
7/9/01 12:12 PST | Duke Nukem 3D News | MrBlonde
Errrm, moving swiftly on from the title. Z-Axis's MrBunwah (no relation) has reviewed Duke 3D's winning multiplayer Co-Op charm. You may feel they got round to it a bit late but hopefully this quote should put your minds at rest.
In addition it's detailed, massively interactive and atmospheric levels still haven't been beaten (and probably won't be until the sequel arrives in the year 3097). All in all definitely worthy of the label 'classic'.
So the more astute amongst you will have realised that we like Duke Nukem, but is a five year old game still worth playing in these days of super-whizz-bang-spinny-3D-with-knobbly-bits? As the man himself says "Come get some."

The folks at pc.ign.com have put up their own preview of 3D Realms and Remedy Entertainment's upcoming Max Payne (due out soon - did you pre-order your copy yet?). Here's a snip:
Art in general in the game is very good with a lot of detail added in to keep you visually interested all of the time. The game will take you through the slums all the way up the mafia ladder into the mansions of some of the higher ups. Textures are really beautiful along with some nice architecture and design. Sound has also been given some special attention with some pretty good voice work.

GameSpy's Max Payne Preview
7/7/01 15:09 PST | Max Payne News | Abe Rahey
While you're waiting for Max Payne to ship (soon - still when it's done though) it might be a good idea to read some of the previews. Knowing this, Hellchick at GameSpy popped up her own preview of the game. Here's a taste of what she had to say about it:
The bulk of the story is told through a combination of both comic book-style panels and cinematics. As Max moves through the story, more elements are uncovered through the things he finds and examines. The story line is extremely important -- unlike many action games where the overarching plot merely serves as a backdrop for the action and could probably be removed without significantly affecting the game, Max Payne's story drives the action, which in turn further drives the story.
You can read more, and check out some of the screenshots, here.

Max Payne Preview
7/6/01 17:35 PST | Max Payne News | Abe Rahey
The folks at GameSpot have put up their preview of 3D Realms and Remedy Entertainment's latest creation, Max Payne (due out soon - When it's done). Here's a taste of what they had to say about it:
And to uncover all of his enemies' death animations, Max will have a bevy of weapons available to him, including a baseball bat, a pipe, a Desert Eagle, a Baretta, a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, a sawed-off shotgun, a Jackhammer full-auto shotgun, an Ingram assault pistol, a Colt M4A1, a sniper rifle, a grenade launcher, frag grenades, and Molotov cocktails. Almost all of these weapons will affect the surrounding environment in some way. A brick wall, for example, will make more noise but fragment fewer pieces when fired open than a wooden post will.

Stay tuned for GameSpy's preview!

Max Payne Update
7/4/01 18:04 PST | Max Payne News | Abe Rahey
3D Realms' George Broussard just updated his .plan with a load of Max Payne updates. Here are a few of them:
* The game is essentially done. It's close to a final release candidate and feature freeze (hopefully later this week). From there it will be bug/compatability fixes only. We're signed off on mouse pads, boxes and everything except the manual (which should be done Friday/Saturday). At that point we just play test and wait on the gold CD.
One area of foucs now is tweaking the harder skill levels that unlock after you beat the game, including New York Minute. In NYM, you start with time on a clock and it counts down. Every time you kill a guy you get more time. If the timer hits zero you die. It's a really, really fun way to play the game after beating it the first time.
* Yes, there will be a demo. I'd imagine it will be out a couple of weeks after Max hits store shelves.
. . .
More information can be found in his .plan update here. Also, if you'd like to pre-order directly from 3D Realms Entertainment please visit this site.
