The Senate is poised to hear debate once again on the Unborn Victims of Violence Act sponsored by Senator Mike DeWine (R-OH). The need for this legislation is all the more urgent in view of the recent discovery of Laci Peterson and her son Conner’s body. A National Organization for Women (NOW) chapter leader in New Jersey went public several weeks ago with her alarm that Scott Peterson was to be charged with two homicides instead of one. NOW’s national spokeswomen have tried to spin their way out of this public relations disaster in recent days.
Laci Peterson’s parents support this bill: CNN.com - Laci Peterson family endorses 'unborn victims' bill - May. 8, 2003. The Catholic Bishops Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities has just announced that this legislation is soon to be renamed the “Laci and Conner’s Law” in memory of this slain mother and son. See Rev. Sheldon’s editorial on this tragedy and NOW’s response to it.
The National Right to Life Committee has detailed information on the Unborn Victims of Violence Act.
In a related story, the Connecticut Supreme Court has just ruled that an unborn baby is simply a “body part,” not a separate human being: http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A26988-2003May7?language=printer. Sadly, the dehumanization of the unborn child continues.
