"You open up new worlds when you open a newspaper."
Newspapers For Literacy and You!

Newspapers For Literacy is a cooperative effort of newspapers working with local schools to use the newspaper as a tool for instruction. Under the program, we provide newspapers at a reduced rate to schools for use in classrooms. The Corpus Christi Caller-Times offers curriculum materials to help schools use the newspaper as a meaningful resource for student learning. Newspapers are useful tools for social studies, reading, language arts, math science, health and home economics classes. They may be used at any age level, including adult education.

Program Purpose

The goal of the Newspapers For Literacy program is to encourage the use of newspapers in education to develop in young people:

  • a continuing desire and ability to read a newspaper critically and reflectively
  • a concern for public issues and motivation to involve themselves in our self-governing process
  • an understanding of the role of a free press in our society
  • a lifelong interest in reading as a pleasurable activity
