Charlize Theron was seen spending quality time with her son, Jackson, as they enjoyed their first public day out together since she ended her engagement to Sean Penn.

The actress was more than happy to lavish attention on her little man as they were seen playing around whilst grabbing a bite to eat in California on Monday.

Charlize, 39, worked her usual effortlessly casual style as she stopped off at a Mexican seafood restaurant with her adorable three-year-old son.

Showcasing her model legs in a navy shorts, the Hollywood star wore a large pinstripe shirt and completed the look with black shades and strappy sandals.

Charlize totted a large black handbag and a sweet personalised sun visor while she later donned a slightly less stylish Frozen hat with a long blonde plait attached.

The Oscar winner reportedly called off her engagement to Sean Penn just weeks ago and the former couple have been lying low ever since.

She reportedly dumped Sean, 54, in May although the exact date of their split is not known - after the pair had been spotted looking loved up together in public numerous times.

Charlize and Sean both attended the Cannes Film Festival in mid May, and looked happy together at the premiere of her film Mad Max: Fury Road on May 14.

However, she was not seen with the Bad Boys star when she presented an award to Seth MacFarlane at the Critic's Choice Awards in Los Angeles on May 31.

Penn dodged questions about marriage earlier this year

Charlize was staying at her Hollywood home with adopted son Jackson, three, before she took off for London on Sunday to film The Huntsman.

Meanwhile Sean has been spending time at his Malibu residence - the beach home was for sale, but he took it off the market recently.
