Florida Judge Orders Mentally Handicapped Woman Starved To Death
Summary: On October 15, 2003, under a court order, doctors removed a feeding tube
from Terri Schindler-Schiavo. She is expected to starve to death within 7-14 days
days without water.
Terri Schindler-Schiavo's feeding tube was removed on October 15, 2003 under an
order issued by Circuit Judge George Greer. The judge has overruled the wishes
of Terri's parents to keep her alive. The husband, Michael Schindler, has claimed
for years that his wife indicated to him that she didn't desire to live if she
were ever incapacitated.
Schindler has been involved in a legal battle over his wife's condition for years
with her parents. Schindler was awarded $700,000 in a malpractice lawsuit for
Terri's condition and will stand to gain financially from her death.
Terri's parents and pro-lifers note that this woman is capable of breathing on
her own and is responsive to her parents. Bioethicist Wesley Smith has noted,
"We're talking about a woman who is not terminally ill, who's not hooked
up to machines, who is going to live a normal lifespan unless her food and water
is taken away."
Burke Balch with the National Right to Life Committee said this is an extremely
important euthanasia case and warns that this signifies a clear trend toward denying
basic medical care to the severely disabled. Balch says, "For about two decades,
the law in virtually every state has decreed that 'surrogates' may authorize denial
of treatment to those who cannot speak for themselves. Consequently, vulnerable
people with impaired consciousness have routinely been denied life-saving treatment,
food and fluids until they die. Perhaps not until the publicity about this case
have large numbers of Americans recognized how deep and widespread is the commitment
to the 'quality of life' ethic among doctors, hospitals, and the courts."
Florida Governor Jeb Bush has the power to stop the starvation of this handicapped
woman. At the very least, he should begin a criminal investigation into the circumstances
surrounding this case. You can contact Gov. Bush at: jeb.bush@myflorida.com;
jeb@jeb.org or fl_governor@eog.state.fl.us
and ask that he do everything in his power to stop the starvation of Terri Schindler-Schavio.
Judge George Greer's email address is: ggreer@co.pinellas.fl.us.
As we were going to press on this story, CNSNews reported that Governor Bush has
instructed his legal staff to find a way to save Terri's life. The CNS story is

Bush's Staff Will Attempt to Intervene in Schiavo Case -- 10/16/2003. For
