H.R. 810 Stem Cell Legislation Must Die—Cord Blood Holds Promise
May 19, 2005 – Congress will soon be debating passage of H.R. 810, a bill that will fund the killing of human embryos for research purposes. The legislation is being opposed by all major pro-life organizations in the nation.
H.R. 810 will overturn President Bush’s pro-life policy prohibiting the use of newly created embryos to be killed for their stem cells. The bill is being sponsored in the House by Mike Castle (R-DE) and Diana DeGette (D-CO). In the Senate, this bill is S. 471 and is being pushed by Senators Arlen Specter (R-PA) and Tom Harkin (D-Iowa). H.R. 810 currently has 198 sponsors.
DoNoHarm, a web site resource on stem cell research has the latest information on the progress being made in using adult stem cells for health purposes.
The National Right to Life Committee also maintains a wealth of information on stem cell research and immorality of killing human embryos for research purposes.
Rep. Christopher Smith (R-NJ) has introduced H.R. 596, the “National Cord Blood Stem Cell Bank Network” bill. This will establish a cord blood registry that will encourage the use of umbilical cord blood for stem cells. This will avoid killing human embryos for their stem cells.
Dr. David Prentice, with the Georgetown University Medical School has published a detailed report explaining stem cell research. To read his report, click here: http://www.stemcellresearch.org/testimony/prentice_2005-01-03.pdf.
