Patents For Human Embryos?
Summary: The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) wants to maintain the legal right to patent human embryos, but pro-life legislators are pushing for a bill that will forbid any company from patenting genetically engineered embryos.
A battle is brewing in the Senate over an amendment to an appropriations bill.
The amendment was authored by Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS). It prohibits any patents
on human embryos by biotechnology companies or other legal entities. The language
says: "Nothing in this section shall be construed to affect claims directed
to or encompassing cells, tissues, organs, or other bodily components that are
not themselves human organisms (including, but not limited to stem cells, stem
cell lines, genes, and living or synthetic organs.)"
The language was inserted into H.R. 2799, an appropriations bill for the Departments
of Commerce, Justice, and State. It is a clarification of a previous amendment
inserted by Dr. Dave Weldon (R-FL)
The National
Right To Life Committee has more details on the Weldon Amendment and biotechnology
issues. The Washington
Post provided a detailed discussion of this as well.
TAKE ACTION: Ask
your Senators to support Brownback's clarifying language in H.R. 2799.
