House Judiciary Committee Holds Hearing On Marriage Amendment
Summary: An important hearing was held on March 30, 2004, to discuss the constitutionality of Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) laws in the U.S. and the Federal Marriage Amendment.
TVC's Rev. Louis P. Sheldon stands between legal scholar Bruce Fein (left)
and former Congressman Bob Barr (R-GA). Fein and Barr testified before the
House Judiciary Committee on the constitutionality of federal laws protecting
marriage as a union between one man and one woman. |
Members of the House Judiciary Committee heard testimony on March 30th, from several
witnesses who testified for and against the constitutionality of DOMA laws and
the Federal Marriage Amendment.
Former Congressman Bob Barr testified against the FMA. Vincent McCarthy with the
American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) explained why it is essential that
an FMA be passed because DOMA laws will be challenged and likely overturned.
Legal scholar Bruce Fein also testified. He does not believe DOMA laws will be
overturned but supports an amendment that would leave such decisions to state
legislatures, not state courts.

TVC's Chairman, Rev. Louis P. Sheldon was present at this historic hearing as
were other TVC staffers.
