Senator Durbin Shades Truth On Judge Roberts; Senator Leahy Claims Roberts Is ‘Radical’
August 18, 2005 – Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee that will grill Judge John Roberts in September, has a credibility problem with George Washington University Professor Jonathan Turley.
Turley, writing in a Los Angeles Times column in July, claimed that when John Roberts met with Dick Durbin, the Senator asked him if he would recuse himself from cases if his Catholic beliefs conflicted with the cases.
Durbin has since denied that this conversation took place. Turley, however, has come forward with a taped phone message from Durbin’s office that confirms the accuracy of Turley’s story. Durbin’s spokesman Joe Shoemaker, claimed that Turley story was wrong and he didn’t know who the source of the story was. Turley provided evidence that Durbin and Shoemaker were both sources for his story. Shoemaker now claims Turley still got his facts wrong.
Durbin and his spokesman Joe Shoemaker have both been exposed as liars by Jonathan Turley. Durbin will be sitting in judgment of John Roberts when the confirmation hearing begins on September 6.
Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) is another member of the Senate Judiciary Committee who will sit in judgment of John Roberts. According to a report in the Associated Press, Leahy has stated that Roberts’ views during his time in the Reagan Administration, were “among the most radical being offered by a cadre intent on reversing decades of policies on civil rights, voting rights, women’s rights, privacy and access to justice.” Leahy and Ted Kennedy (D-MA) are demanding John Roberts’ memos that deal with affirmative action now in order to find something to use against him.
White House spokesman Steve Schmidt reacted to Leahy’s remarks: “The ease with which Sen. Leahy distorts Judge Roberts’ record is troubling and may indicate that the Democrats are not yet done trying to make that argument, although it has already been discredited.”
