South Korea Scientists Announce Human Clone Success
Summary: Scientists in South Korea have recently announced the cloning of 30 human
embryos for research and destruction.
South Korean scientists have recently cloned 30 human embryos as part of an effort
to use embryonic stem cells in the curing of such diseases as Parkinson's and
diabetes.
The effort to use embryonic stem cells, however, involves serious bioethical problems.
Christian bioethicist Dr.
Nigel M. de S. Cameron has noted what these scientists have done is "manufactured
these tiny humans for one sole purpose: experimentation and destruction. They
have pioneered the mass-production of humans for death. They have the Brave New
World in their sights."
Dr. John Kilner, president of The
Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity said, "Controversy continues to
swirl around killing even long-abandoned human embryos for research. The South
Korean experiment disturbingly goes significantly further. It produces human embryos
for the explicit purpose of fatally mining them to obtain bodily materials for
experimental purposes. One does not need to see human embryos as full-fledged
persons to be deeply troubled by such manipulation of human life."
Dr. Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader issued a statement against human cloning
in the Senate on February 12th. He noted: "C.S. Lewis saw decades ago the
dangers facing human dignity. In his essay, the Abolition of Man, he warned that
in conquering nature, nature is actually conquering mankind. To clone a human
being is to move from procreation to the manufacture of human life. This is dangerous."
Illinois is on the verge of passing a cloning bill that will allow the killing
of human embryos for stem cells. National Review has details: "Brave
New Illinois."
