NIH Hearings Held In Senate
Summary: On January 22, 2004, the the Senate held a hearing on the National Institutes
of Health (NIH) and its alleged funding of improper research and engaging in conflict
of interest in the giving of grants for research.
A Senate committee held a hearing on the NIH on January 22 to investigate charges
of funding improper research and conflict of interest in the giving of grants
for research projects.
TVC's Executive Director Andrea Lafferty attended the hearing and issued a press
release criticizing the results. She said that the hearing only "scratches
the surface of the problems at National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH is funding
studies with which intelligent citizens disagree. They condescendingly tell us
that we average citizens could not possibly understand the complex workings of
science….NIH can no longer be treated as a sacred cow where its funding and
review practices continue to go unquestioned and receive little oversight."
The Traditional Values Coalition first brought media attention to the NIH's funding
of questionable research projects on the sexual practices and attitudes of homosexuals,
spirit mediums, and pornography. In the wake of TVC's revelations about the NIH's
funding of bizarre sex research, the Los Angeles Times launched a separate investigation
into potential conflict of interest problems between NIH scientists and drug companies.
NIH's leader, Dr. Elias Zerhouni, claims that his internal investigation of TVC's
charges found that all of its research projects had a legitimate public health
value. Zerhouni's federal agency receives $27 billion a year for dozens of separate
NIH research centers.
The hearings will be chaired by Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) who has claimed "I
want to find out what's going on." (The Bulletin Forerunner, Jan. 19, 2004)
TVC has published the results of its detailed investigation into the bizarre sex
studies funded by NIH. Access our report here: "NIH
